Recent SC State University graduate, Mahogany Fisher, embodies Bulldog tenacity through her academic excellence, resilience and desire to uplift others. Fisher, who on May 11, received a Bachelor of Science in psychology, was the only member of the Class of 2018 to maintain a 4.0 GPA all four years.

She was also a four-year starter for the SC State women’s soccer team. She made 46 career appearances and amassed over 150 saves during her career. Additionally, she participated in track and field during her last semester.

The Chester County, South Carolina native’s decision to pursue psychology, specifically in sports, formed through personal experiences and adversities she encountered. After an accident occurred in her high school training room, Fisher suffered from second and third-degree burns on her legs.

“It was a very tough time for me. Despite being injured and unsure about the future, I was offered a scholarship to attend SC State and was accepted into the Honor’s College. My gratitude is never-ending, and I want to help other athletes conquer their obstacles too. They [athletes] need psychologists who understand them. I know what it’s like to be injured and to feel hopeless in your athletic career. I can help others get through it,” Fisher said.

As she prevailed through her injuries and eventually committed to college soccer, she made her school work a priority and believes that time management helped her balance assignments, soccer and life overall.

Her work ethic and charm have left an imprint on numerous members of the SC State University community, including faculty and staff.

“I’ve had the chance to learn what sets Mahogany apart from other students. When many other students tend to crumble under pressure, she thrives in it. Having always been both an athlete and a student, she enjoys the demand-demand situations.

Although I can't comment on her athletic accomplishments, I do know that not only were her assignments submitted on time, but they were usually submitted well in advance of the deadlines and were always best-in-class,” said Dr. Douglas Miller, associate professor of psychology and sociology.

“All of this motivation has prepared her for the next goal of receiving a master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology. My hope is that an identical student will take the torch. Mahogany is the type of student who leaves a life-long impression,” he continued.

Fisher’s former soccer coach, Sandy Burris, has acknowledged the honor graduate’s grit and commitment to achieving her goals while inspiring others to succeed.

“Mahogany Fisher is an amazing human who reminds you that if you believe in yourself and are humble and honest, the sky is the limit. Her work ethic and self-accountability are visible in everything she does. It was a pleasure to coach her, and I am excited to see where life takes her, and the amazing effect she will have on others,” Burris said.

In addition, Fisher has impacted the lives of many through community service. Through her Honors College class, she created “On and Off the Field Mentoring,” which is an afterschool program that assists young children with their studies and helps them stay physically active through sports activities. Fisher has also volunteered at local soup kitchens, churches, and has helped with food drives and coat donations during the winter months.

Eager to gain experience working with athletes, throughout her college career, she completed job shadowing with the South Carolina Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, (SCYS ODP) helping to prepare young girls to compete as Olympic athletes. The SC State alumna applauds the university’s employees for teaching her professionalism.

She is appreciative of faculty and staff for helping her and other students learn how to dress professionally and prepare for the workforce. She admires the family culture of SC State and is thankful for her former professors, who have invested in her throughout her college career.

Fisher offered advice to students who are working towards reaching a major milestone, such as earning a degree.

“Follow your instructor’s directions. They [professors] know who is just there versus those who are willing to learn and do better. Also, don’t just study for the test. Study to retain the information you learn because it will help you in the future, and everything will flow together throughout life,” she said.

Fisher plans to attend graduate school in the fall at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She aspires to work as an applied psychologist in sports for a professional athletic team, a university, high school or with Olympic athletes. Fisher considers applied psychology a great fit for her, as it will allow her to help athletes during their most critical moments.

Moreover, she hopes to continue working with the ODP as a mentor.

She lives by the phrase, “It is what it is” and prefers to live in the moment and not dwell on anything.

Fisher enjoys going to the movies, reading, spending time with friends, going to the beach and staying fit. She thanks her family for their support, as they are the driving force behind her diligence.
