Scholarship Application: The Role of Resume

Scholarship Application: The Role of Resume
Posted By: Ann Mosley on May 30, 2018

Getting a scholarship is an important aspect of getting a quality education without earning a financial debt for the next 10-20 years. But with the limited number of scholarships and a plenty of candidates hoping to get on, it is important to do your best in order to stay noticeable.

One way to stand out from a thousand of same-looking applications is to write an understandable and convincing resume highlighting your best strengths and qualities. It’s your only opportunity to demonstrate and convince the committee members that you really deserve the scholarship you apply for.

Hardly believe it? Let us bring you around first. Once you get how significant it is to write a high-quality application, read a post about scholarship resume with practical tricks on how to write one. Make sure you use tips exactly for a scholarship resume since one differs from the resume that people send to companies when applying for a job.

How Important is a Resume for a Scholarship?

Now, you might be surprised if we tell you that scholarship applications generally do not imply sending a resume BUT one can always change the course of the game. The thing is, most scholarship applications require a basic set of documents where applicants have no opportunity to demonstrate what they have to offer. Thus, adding a resume to this kind of an application is a perfect idea for any future college student. After all, submitting additional materials is not forbidden by the committee, so why not?

Advantages of a Scholarship Resume

Call it an academic resume, an academic CV or a resume for a scholarship, all of those implement the same function - summarizing the candidate's achievements in education, academic research, relevant job or extracurricular experience (sports, volunteering). Here you need to show the admission committee that you really deserve to receive a scholarship for your studies.

And since the resume is one of the first documents to be reviewed, this your best chance to make a good impression. Remember that this is your marketing tool that "sells" your professional, academic and even non-academic achievements.

Most of these qualifications won’t be even mentioned in your genetic application or a motivation letter. Thus, delivering this valuable data through your scholarship resume can make a great difference.

What to Include in a Scholarship Resume?

Because most of the students can’t boast of a super long and valuable job experience, which is typically the most substantial section in a traditional resume, there comes a question what you actually should write about. Fortunately, there are lots of related items you can mention in a scholarship resume, such as:

• Community Service, Volunteering, and Other Involvements

Volunteering is something that can please every committee. Showing that you are actively involved in a community service and devote your free time to helping others indicates that you not only care about others but gained valuable skills and experience. Also, participation in student clubs and organizations (student council, debate club etc.) is a big advantage as well. It shows that you are willing to learn something new and have some valuable knowledge to share with others in the college.

• Education

Well, this is clear. You add information about your high school or your previous college if apply for a master’s degree or are willing to pursue the second higher education.

Remember though that some items become irrelevant in your scholarship resume once you gain more valuable experience. For instance, if you are a high school graduate and you apply for a college, then you have no choice but to mention about your high school in the education section. But let’s imagine that you finish your freshman year in some college and willing to transfer. In this case, you better remove the information about a high school and replace one with the college you used to study in. The same related to internships and actual employment, when it’s better to skip the info about your summer part-time job and replace it with an actual employment in a company.

And, of course, you want to make sure your resume is clean, concise and relevant. With these recommendations, the scholarship should be yours!
