entrepreneurial zeitgeist

entrepreneurial zeitgeist

It appears we have many members and few introductions.

To introduce myself:

After graduating from Hampton University, I worked two years at Verizon (Bell Atlantic NSI) as a Software Engineer and Team Lead. The next five years, I worked in Silicon Valley as a Senior Software Engineer.

After traveling internationally for more than a year, I moved to Miami in 2004 and started Astrient Labs, LLC with the vision of creating a software technologist organization.

Starting my own company has been a tough but rewarding experience. Although monetizing intellections can be a long process, I would encourage anyone considering entrepreneurship to try it at least once.

Now my point of discussion:

Looking back at my scholastic career, and to some degree my passive socialization, I do not feel I was exposed to the full gamut of post-college career paths. For example, I never considered paths leading towards Fixed Income Engineering, Venture Capital, or Serial Entrepreneurship.

I feel that our schools should do more to support entrepreneurship. My alma mater, almost famously now, is devoting its energies into a dress code that it feels will better help its students become future employees. In contrast, Columbia University and MIT, in addition to emphasizing entrepreneurship, have Venture Capital organizations that invest money into alumni businesses.

What I would like to see in this forum, is a genuine and extemporaneous exchange of ideas and expertise.

Thanks,

Rashid Mayes

Congradulations Sir for starting up! I too have started a Limited Liability Corporation. My firm The Citizen Group is yet to finalize our web presence but we are still busy. Entrepreneurship is definitely a 'track' that needs to be minored in more widely. I even proffered to a Dean of the School of Business to not only require some students to do a business plan-depending if that took the classs-to mandating every Biz. Sch. Std. write a Biz. Plan of their choice and file for either a LLC, Sub-Chptr. S, or PLC, etc...

More directly to your point though, I'm an economic zephyr myself. I can be a billionaire and give half of it away! I want to make profit, but it is not what drives me. Mission drives me. Vision propels me. Finances facilitate for me. God enables me! But we still need to be investment saavy and savings savvy.

I too would like to see more exchange. Hey, HBCU Connect LETS go ahead and pre-Annouce the HBCU Connect Biz Summit. (Business Expo/Conference geared to help groom the next NYSE and AMEX listed corporations or companies that are successfully led by Blacks). Home based businesses are a good place to start. Franchise too. I recommend Detroit as the first city to host it! After all we are America's city with the highest concentration of Blacks with a population of over 900,000.

Good job Zeitgeist (thanks for encapsulating the intelligence of the era we are in need of-entrepreneurship)
