Learn from a Legend. Ruth Woo Emerging Leaders Fellowship invites you to be a fellow!
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on June 06, 2018

As the only county in the United States named after Martin Luther King, Jr., King County is a vibrant community with residents that represent countries from around the world. It is a region with increasing diversity that cherishes the artistic and social traditions of many cultures. Together, we're changing the way government delivers service and winning national recognition as a model of excellence.

King County has an exciting fellowship opportunity for those who have a demonstrated commitment to public service. The Ruth Woo Emerging Leaders Fellowship is named after the revered community leader Ruth Woo. Ruth Woo was not only a community leader, but a mentor to many elected officials, and dedicated her life to public service. In her honor, King County is offering this one year, paid, full-time position. The person selected for this fellowship will demonstrate their commitment to furthering the achievements of Ruth Woo and others, who embraced empowering and advocating for youth from communities that are economically disadvantaged and historically have lacked opportunities to further their education goals and career aspirations. Read this to learn more about Ruth Woo's legacy.

The objectives of the opportunity will be:

Gain firsthand understanding of the branches of government and how they interact with each other, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service in its many forms from elected officials, to staff, to stakeholders, to clients, and the economy/environment.

WHO MAY APPLY: This recruitment is open to all qualified candidates.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position is nonexempt (hourly) and is overtime eligible with supervisory pre-approval. Typical hours are Monday - Friday 8am-5pm.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applicants should complete the online application, and attach or paste a resume and cover letter outlining why you are the most qualified to be selected as a fellow.

If you need an accommodation in the recruitment process or an alternate format of this announcement, please inquire directly with the Human Resources contact for this job announcement.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applicants will be screened for clarity, completeness, and competitiveness. Priority in selection will be given to economically disadvantaged college graduates from backgrounds that have historically lacked equitable access to education, employment, and professional development opportunities. The most competitive candidates may be invited to participate in one or more interviews. Materials should speak to your demonstrated commitment to public service and your background. Reference checks will also be conducted.

CONTACT: If you have additional questions regarding this recruitment, please contact Lisa Longdon at lisa.longdon@kingcounty.gov or (206) 477-3258.

Job Duties
The fellow will be assigned to work in several county agencies for periods of three to four months at a time. These agencies include; Executive's Office of Performance Strategy and Budget (PSB), King County Council, Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP), and the Department of Executive Services/Facilities Management Division (FMD). Projects will be subject to the specific needs of the host department at the time of the internship and the fellow's interests.

Work assignments will vary and can include; providing project support for government initiatives, assisting with strategic planning activities, external communications support to include social media and seeking public input, tracking legislation, supporting internal business operations, goal tracking and measurements. These assignments will provide the fellow with an opportunity to perform real work under the guidance of experienced County employees, learn new skills, and gain experience while working on important efforts King County is embracing to further the health and well-being of our region and further our goals of equity and social justice.
