The Advancement Officer is primarily responsible for the identification and qualification of major gift prospects and will manage a small major gifts prospect portfolio. Bridging the gap between the Annual Fund and Major Gifts, this position is essential to ongoing pipeline expansion for university development as well as university schools and units.

Work Performed

Qualify, Cultivate, Solicit and Steward Prospects

• Identify, cultivate, solicit and manage a small portfolio of new major gift prospects for all University schools and units with a focus on those with the potential capacity to make gifts up to $100k.
• Meet with Duke prospects identified by research, fieldwork, individual prospecting, and screenings to personally qualify their financial capacity and inclination to make gifts to Duke. Diplomatically ask Qualify questions to distinguish between prospects and suspects.
• Create strategies to connect prospects to Duke; generate and review prospect lists strategically to select donors most likely to have high capacity.
• Build customized cultivation activities for a wider range of donor interests and readiness, utilizing available Duke resources such as faculty, administrators and other leaders.
• Develop initial strategies for involvement and solicitation, including appropriate referrals to fundraising colleagues in schools and units.
• Construct post-qualification visit plans for viable prospects, including next steps and moves. Refer prospects to fundraising colleagues in schools and units based on the prospect’s interests.
• Independently manage stewardship plans in collaboration with Donor Relations team.
• Report on activity on a regular basis in accordance with the Major Gift team standards.
• Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of Duke's regional volunteer and prospect base and regional activities, University-wide funding priorities, and a general knowledge of school and unit funding priorities.

Volunteer and Relationship Management

• Build relationships with previously un-engaged prospects.


• Develop relationships with key faculty, chairs representing a broader range of constituents in order to meet their donors’ interests and needs.
• Maintain active communication with development officers throughout the University to coordinate prospect activity and to make and "take" referrals
