How to Survive Medical School and Thrive as a Doctor

How to Survive Medical School and Thrive as a Doctor
Posted By: Meghan Belnap on June 27, 2018

If you’d like to become a physician, you’ll have to go through years of medical school. While so many people have goals of becoming world-renown physicians, the journey of matriculating through medical school can leave many students feeling a sense of burn-out and discouragement. However, there are ways to make it through the journey and thrive as a doctor. In order to make it happen, there are a few components you’ll want to consider.

Utilize Tutoring Services

There are going to be plenty of times when you don’t know the answers to the questions you’re asked. In this case, don’t be afraid or ashamed to admit that you don’t know. However, don’t stop there. Do what you need to do in order to get the answers. This might mean that you need to sign up for tutoring services with test preparatory material such as mcat private tutoring.

Create a Study Schedule

There are a lot of written tests you’ll need to take and pass in order to get through medical school. When you’re at the level of medical school, you don’t want to get into the habit of focusing only on how to pass the test. It’s important to digest the material so that you can know exactly what you’re getting into when you step into surgery or another scenario.

Create a study schedule that allows you to really study to understand versus study to pass a test.

Maintain Relationships

Even though your work is important, don’t forget about cultivating relationships. Make sure the people in your life understand that you’ll have to sacrifice time with them in order to achieve your goals. However, don’t leave them by the wayside. Be intentional about giving your parents, friends and other family members phone calls to check in. Schedule time for a dinner date or a few hours of fun on a day off.

Find a Semblance of Balance

Exercise, nutrition, and vacations are important to include in your lifestyle. Don’t fill your life up with work and lose yourself in the process. Maintain a sense of who you are and religiously practice self-care.

As you begin the journey of pursuing a medical career, understand that you can do it. There will be times when you feel a little discouraged. There might be times when you feel as though it is almost impossible, but as long as you maintain a semblance of discipline, you can make it through. Stick with the journey and remain faithful. Before long, you’ll be well into your career and you’ll have the privilege of touching countless lives.
