The 5 Best Ways to Prepare for a Law Degree

The 5 Best Ways to Prepare for a Law Degree
Posted By: Anica Oaks on July 06, 2018

Becoming a lawyer is a long and arduous process, but your law degree will be worth it. In addition to this being a lucrative career path, legal professionals often have a great deal of job security. Here is a look at a few steps that you will need to take before you graduate from law school.

Complement Your Major with Other Activities
Law firms want well-rounded and dynamic students who excel in many different areas. That being said, being passionate about law is still the most important variable in this equation. Your other classes and extracurricular activities should enhance and complement your major. You should also seek out activities and jobs that will prepare you for the field of law that you would like to focus on.

Choosing a Field
Some firms will take practically any case that comes their way, but most legal professionals such as those at Kenneth J. Allen Law Group focus on a more specific field. Some of the most popular fields include criminal law, civil rights, family law, and tax law. When applying for a full-time position at a firm, you will most likely need to show them that you have at least some experience in the field that they focus on. That experience might include undergrad courses, graduate courses, or past internships.

Consider Joining a Pre-Law Group
Depending on where you are at in your studies, it might be beneficial to join a pre-law group. One of these societies will help you network with other students who are on the same path as you. Many of these groups offer services such as LSAT prep, proofreading for resumes, and professional counseling. Being an official member of an illustrious pre-law group is also going to look great on your CV.

Build Relationships with Your Professors
Many law school professors are working attorneys as well, and that makes them an excellent resource. During your studies, you want to develop as many contacts as possible so that you can land a job or an internship. If one of your professors is working in the field that you are interested in, then you should try to pick their brain for information. They might even have connections to local law firms that are looking to hire.

Become an Intern
One of the best things that you can do for your future career is to carry out an internship at a law firm. An entry-level internship can quickly turn into a full-time job as long as you are diligent and eager. Even if you aren’t offered a job at the same firm, most larger firms want to hire attorneys who have experience working in that type of environment. In order to land a great internship, you need to have stellar grades and an excellent score on your LSAT.

Before you step off the podium with a degree in your hand, you want to be sure that you have done everything in your power to hit the ground running when your new career starts. These few tips will help you land a great job at a world-class firm as soon as you graduate.
