ASU's National Center Hosting Annual Patrons @ Donors Reception Sunday!

WHEN: Sunday (Aug. 19) from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
WHERE: ASU's Levi Watkins Learning Center (ASU Library).

The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University will host its 15th annual Patrons and Donors Reception on Sunday (August 19) from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Levi Watkins Learning Center (ASU Library).

The reception is held annually to recognize and honor the patrons of ASU's National Center and is an opportunity to say "thank you" to individuals and organizations that have contributed financial or material donations to the University.

Also during the reception, each donor is recognized for making a donation to ASU’s archives. Through its academic and cultural programs, exhibitions, tours and other activities, the National Center uses these donations to preserve the history and integrity of the Civil Rights Movement and other critical aspects of the American experience.

Donations to the National Center help to maintain the National Center’s status as a living museum and civil rights clearinghouse for teaching and empowering future generations.

The National Center will highlight this year’s notable collections from the following Donors:

● Alumna Dr. Gwendolyn J. Cooke, (’65) Cooke’s collection represents several of the nation’s artistic giants such as Benny Andrews, Marion Greenwood, Jacob Lawrence and Henry Ossawa Tanner.

● Alumnus Joe L. Reed, (’62) Reed donated the Alabama State Teachers Association (ASTA) Collection. The ASTA was created in 1892 to represent the interest of black teachers in the state of Alabama.

● Tiffany McCord, Circuit Court Clerk, and ASU Board of Trustees member. McCord has placed a long-term loan of The Montgomery Bus Boycott Litigation Records to ASU. This collection contains Circuit Court records covering the court cases of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr. and almost 100 other Montgomery Bus Boycott leaders who were indicted and arrested for violating Alabama’s anti-boycott law.

● Rev. Robert and Jean Graetz, civil rights activists (Jean, ASU alumna 2015) – The couple donated a letter written by Rosa Parks describing the morning of Jan. 10, 1957, when Ku Klux Klansmen bombed their house.

There will be artifacts from each collection on display in the Levi Watkins Learning Center Lecture Hall and Special Collections.
