Birmingham - area resident has a winning spirit

An Alabama State University honor student was crowned the 2018 National American Miss Alabama Teen at the state competition held recently at the Sheraton in downtown Birmingham, and she will soon be off to compete for the national title in the fall.

ASU sophomore Candace Knight will represent the state of Alabama during Thanksgiving-week at the national pageant, which is being held in Anaheim, Calif. While there, she has the opportunity to win her share of more than $500,000 in cash and prizes.

The Pleasant Grove, Ala. native competed against approximately 60 other young ladies to win the state crown, and additionally was awarded First Place in the Casual Wear Model Competition, Fan Appeal, and she received accolades for having the highest grade-point average.

“I strongly believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. This was my very first pageant. I came in with the mindset of winning and that is exactly what I did,” Knight said.

At the national event in November, the ASU Criminal Justice major will compete with other teen winners from different states across the nation and will be judged in several categories, which include: interview, personal introduction, formal wear, resume and community service.

ABOUT THE PAGEANT
The National American Miss Pageant awards $1.5 million in cash, scholarships and prizes each year to recognize and assist the development of young women nationwide. Its goal is to develop the success of its participants across the nation with a program designed to be age appropriate and family oriented.

Pageants are held in each state for young women in five different age divisions (at the state level) or six (at the national level), ranging from ages 4 - 20. If Knight wins the crown, she will take home $5,000, plus any additional prizes she may win.

ASU WISHES HER WELL
Alabama State's vice president for Student Affairs, Dr. Davida Haywood, said she is thrilled about this opportunity for yet another one of the University’s students.

“We are always excited to hear about the achievements of our students outside of the classroom. Knowing that Candace has been selected among her peers as National American Miss Alabama Teen 2018 is another win-win for our institution,” Haywood said.

KNIGHT HAS A WINNING SPIRIT
When it comes to competing in the national pageant in California, Knight has a winning drive and spirit.

“When I win at nationals, I will have the opportunity to travel, meet different people, be able to collaborate in different community service projects and represent girls from across the United States,” Knight said.

“I’m looking to bring the national crown home to Alabama,” Knight said.
