Manager of K-12 Programs - 85546
Organization: LD-Laboratory Directorate

Discover your future at Berkeley Lab!

Berkeley Lab’s Government and Community Relations Office has an opening for a K-12 Program Manager to join their leadership team! Reporting to the Head of Government and Community Relations, the K-12 Program Manager will manage the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of Berkeley Lab’s K-12 science education and outreach programs to advance STEM aptitude in the Bay Area and to build and enhance the Lab’s relationships with important local communities. These programs will be in full support of and aligned with the mission of Berkeley Lab.

What You Will Do:
• Working collaboratively within Government and Community Relations Office (GCR) and with the Lab’s Workforce Development and Education Office (WD&E), national scientific research facilities, scientific divisions, strategic communications, and senior Lab leadership, this position will manage the planning, development, evaluation, revision, staffing, and day-to-day implementation of K-12 programs.
• Consistently engage and collaborate with the Lab’s Manager of Community Relations to ensure that the K-12 program and Community Relations activities, goals, and objectives are well aligned to advance the Lab’s standing in the community.
• Develop K-12 strategic goals, objectives, and implementation plans in coordination with key external stakeholders with a priority emphasis on Berkeley, Oakland, and West Contra Costa County unified school districts.
• Develop K-12 program content based on the Lab’s strategic scientific initiatives and community relations goals, and by gathering information from Berkeley Lab STEM subject matter experts and translating it to grade appropriate language in documents and materials.
• Plan and budget activities that align with the Berkeley Lab fiscal year and the K-12 academic year. Planning includes: developing grade appropriate content and curriculum; managing event logistics such as space, materials, time, volunteers, equipment, registration and site access; and ensuring partner schools and community groups are fully prepared prior to events.
• Recruit and coordinate schools’ and community groups’ participation in Berkeley Lab’s K-12 programs.
• Recruit and promote participation of Berkeley Lab staff scientists/non-scientists in K-12 science education programs, including managing Lab tour partners and volunteers.
• Supervise a small team to help execute and implement successful K-12 programs.
• Build key performance indicators and conduct regular assessments of Berkeley Lab’s K-12 educational programs’ effectiveness.

• Explore and secure external sources of funding for K-12 STEM activities as appropriate and required to fulfill the missions of Berkeley Lab and of the K-12 program.
• Attend community events outside of standard work hours to promote and represent Berkeley Lab’s K-12 programs.
• Position will require occasional after hours or weekend work.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on September 28, 2018.

• This is a full time, career appointment.
• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
• Salary is commensurate with experience.
• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
