Jonathan PiersolHoward University has announced the appointment of Jonathan Piersol as the Chief Information Officer (CIO), effective September 4, 2018. In his role, Piersol will be responsible for the planning, development and implementation of Enterprise Technology Services’ (ETS) strategic plan and operational initiatives, which will support the administrative, research and academic information technology and systems for the Howard University community.

“We are delighted to have Mr. Piersol join the Howard University team,” says EVP and Chief Operating Officer Tashni-Ann Dubroy, Ph.D. “With over 30 years of business-focused technology and leadership experience, he will lead transformational changes in information technology on our campus.”

Piersol will provide leadership for information technology efforts through systems management, resource acquisition, new technology evaluation and user consultation to support the Howard mission of building an interactive, student and research-centered institution that is committed to excellence in teaching and learning.

“I’m honored by the trust that President Wayne Frederick and Chief Operating Officer Tashni-Ann Dubroy have placed in me through the appointment as Chief Information Officer for Howard University,” says Piersol. “I’d like to thank my family for their support and all the members of the Howard community that I’ve spoken with during the selection process.

This is an exciting time to be a Bison as Howard University presses forward on all technology frontiers.”

He joins Howard University after serving as the vice president and CIO of The Thurston Group, LLC (TTG) for over five years, where he was responsible for providing leadership in all areas of information technology applications, systems and services as well as the strategic planning of TTG’s IT environment. He also administered multiple national and international technology contracts to build public and private cloud environments, and oversaw major project teams for commercial, federal, state and local government clients.

Moreover, Piersol served as the executive director and deputy chief information officer at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he served and provided leadership, policy, strategic and operational planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity for the University’s centralized computer operations.

During a 12-year tenure, Piersol worked at George Washington University where he first served as the director of Enterprise Systems before becoming the managing director for Strategic Planning. While there, he regularly worked with several University officials to refine the University's quality control standards and provided leadership for institution-wide technology strategy. He also operated over 1,200 business applications and systems, 3,500 indoor/outdoor wireless access points, migrated legacy monolith servers to hyper-converged virtualized machines and more.

Piersol earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and computer information systems from Strayer College. He obtained two master’s degrees: one in information systems from George Washington University and his MBA in general management from Georgetown University. Additionally, Piersol received two masters certifications in IT governance and managing technical organizations and teams.
