WHAT: ASU sponsors two dance festivals, Alabama Minority Choreographers & Alabama Festival of Ballet. WHEN: Friday-Saturday, Sept. 14 - 15; see below for dates and times for both events. WHERE: Troy-Davis Theatre, 251 Montgomery St., Montgomery. Dance lovers in the tri-county area are in for a hot-time in the old town this weekend when they attend two inaugural festivals, which are the Alabama Minority Choreographers Festival and the Alabama Festival of Ballet. They are both created by James R. Atkinson Jr., associate professor of dance at Alabama State University. The Capital City will be booming with a packed calendar of dynamic performances from Alabama’s professional and semi-professional choreographers and ballet companies; as well as educational institutions. The two festivals that both are being held at the Troy Davis Theatre (251 Montgomery St., Montgomery), are an opportunity to showcase these artists' talents in the state's Capital. The descriptions of the two festivals are below: Friday, Sept. 14 Looking for an evening of exquisite dance? Come to Alabama State University’s Alabama Minority Choreographers Festival (AMCF) on Friday, Sept. 14. A pre-show discussion with choreographers starts at 5:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 6 p.m. The collaborative evening of dance showcases the choreographic talents of three guest companies: the Dance Theatre/Huntsville; Arova Contemporary Ballet/ Birmingham; and J. Lockhart Performing Arts Institute/Birmingham. The nine talented featured artists are Lindsay Benton, Jaylen Clay, Jordan Cowan, Kavin Grant, Cory-Nicole Hinton, Lawrence M. Jackson, Angelene Clarissa Kendall, Jamarious Stewart and Jarvis Williams. “Alabama State University’s Alabama Minority Choreographers Festival is excited to pay homage to some of the black directors in the state who contribute to making black dance excellent,” Atkinson said. Dance genres will feature modern dance, jazz, contemporary and a little hip-hop. Atkinson said AMCF’s long-term impact is to provide minority choreographers in Alabama with a place to present their fresh choreographic ideas that reach far beyond the core of the educational or dance school settings. “It will also offer another performance opportunity to the dance community in the state’s Capital,” Atkinson said. “I wanted to provide a venue for black choreographers to share their choreographic voices. AMCF creates an environment of cultivation, exploration and diversity in dance.” Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with a valid I.D. Saturday, Sept. 15 Tri-county residents are in for an exceptional night of dance when they attend Alabama State University’s Alabama Festival of Ballet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. “I started this festival because I wanted to showcase the amazing ballet this state has to offer and to foster relationships between colleges, schools and professional companies from across the state,” Atkinson said. Saturday’s accomplished companies include Alabama Ballet, Arova Contemporary Ballet, Montgomery Ballet, Andalusia Ballet, Mobile Ballet, and an additional performances by the Alabama Dance Academy. Talented resident dancers from Alabama State University, Troy University and University of Alabama also will perform. The programming represents a range of ballet styles, from classical to contemporary. Troupes will dance to inspiring excerpts from Don Quixote, Le Corsaire Gand Pas de Deux, Sleeping Beauty, Spring Waters' Pas de Deux and much more. “Don’t miss this once in a life time opportunity to view all three of Alabama’s professional ballet companies, University Dance Programs and the state’s prominent ballet schools on stage in Montgomery,” Atkinson said. “This festival will indeed be a great way to start your week.” NOTE: These events are made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Alabama State University, Troy University, Dr. Johnathon Smith of Premier Anesthesia Montgomery, Baptist Healthcare System and the Law Office of Sandra Lewis, P.C.
