Students, counselors impressed with Alcorn State University’s High School Day festivities

Students, counselors impressed with Alcorn State University’s High School Day festivities
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on September 17, 2018

Listening to his brother's stories about attending Alcorn State University and learning of its accolades are two reasons why Nygel Stallworth was thrilled to participate in the University's High School Day. After spending the day on campus, Stallworth, an 11th-grade student at Saint Martin High School in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, understands Alcorn's popularity.

"I'm excited about attending this event because it's at a predominantly black school, and I've heard so many great things about Alcorn," said Stallworth. "My brother goes to school here, and I plan to follow his footsteps because I've heard about all of the good experiences that comes with attending an HBCU."

Stallworth was one of over 6,000 students to flood the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex Saturday, Sept. 15 for Alcorn's annual recruiting event. Students from schools across the state of Mississippi and beyond enjoyed entertainment from the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band, numerous sororities and fraternities, and the Student Government Association (SGA) cabinet. Alcorn faculty and staff were also present at tables in the HPER Complex to shed light on the University’s academic offerings.

Introducing prospective students to life at Alcorn was the goal for Raymunda Barnes, the assistant vice president at Pearl River Community College and chaperone for Mississippi Gulf Coast students. His hope was for the students to enjoy themselves, and to one day further their education at the university.

"We want to expose the students to Alcorn while they are high school juniors and seniors so that they can get the Alcorn experience early," said Barnes.

"Hopefully this trip will inspire the students to attend Alcorn in the future."

The event's growth can be credited to the efforts of Alcorn's Office of Admissions. Their numerous high school campus tours throughout the school year have been a tool for attracting prospective students. Lamar Scott, an advisor, and recruiter for the university spoke about how the tours got students excited to return to Alcorn for High School Day.

"The reaction from the students was excellent," said Scott. "We've received positive feedback on our campus tours that we host throughout the year, and the students were excited about returning for this event. They had a great time."

Katangela Tenner, director of Admissions and Recruiting, praised everyone involved with the event for their service and dedication to making High School Day a success.

"I would like to thank all alumni, parents, and councils that bring students here every year," said Tenner. "I would also like to thank all supporting staff members who take time from their busy schedules to make this event a success. I'm very happy and pleased to have so many students on our campus today."
