About Valerie Shaw:
Valerie Shaw has a background in journalism – having reported for a number of publications, including the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Sentinel and the Wave Publications – and in public relations--earning a Master’s degree in Public Relations from the University of Southern California. She was also the first (and perhaps the only) reporter to bring a successful discrimination lawsuit against her former employer, the powerful Los Angeles Times in 1981, thus changing the paper’s hiring practices forever.
Both her career as an award-winning business writer and as a business owner spans nearly 50 years.

Shaw has—either by herself or with partners—owned retail, wholesale, and manufacturing businesses and been involved in the development of dozens more.
She was a founding member of the Black Public Relations Society, Inc, and she was recently honored by the L.A. City Council for being the Mother of the Black Journalists’ Association of Southern California, founded in 1980.
