VSU Upward Bound Program receives supplemental STEM Grant

VSU Upward Bound Program receives supplemental STEM Grant
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on November 16, 2018

The Virginia State University (VSU) Upward Bound Program was awarded a one-time supplemental award of $40,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to implement activities for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The award will enable the Upward Bound Program to increase access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) coursework including computer science and hands-on learning opportunities through expanded course offerings, high-quality on-line coursework and other innovative delivery mechanisms.

“The VSU Upward Bound Program serves 88 high school students,” said Regina Barnett Tyler, director of VSU TRiO Programs.

“We will utilize these funds to introduce students to the fundamentals of computing, to provide them with hands-on experiences and to educate them about majoring in computer science or other STEM fields that will prepare them for one of the top 10 computer technology careers trending today. The main goal of our program is to spur interest and motivate students to pursue a career in the STEM fields.”

According to the U.S. News & World Report (2018), “all the computers, tablets, smartphones and other high-tech devices our society is dependent on, we need the skills of professionals in technology jobs to make our obsessions in tech possible. The Labor Department predicts that tech jobs will grow faster than average for all jobs at a rate of 13 percent this decade; but it’s not just hiring demand that makes this industry one to watch, they are also high paying jobs that boast low unemployment rates.”

The Upward Bound Program will partner with the College of Engineering and Technology to implement the 2018-2019 Saturday sessions and summer programs.
