DSU Students Shine Brightly at AMP Competition

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on November 20, 2018 Delaware State University’s science students once again shined brightly with award-winning presentations, this time at the 20th annual Philadelphia AMP (Alliance for Minority Participation) Research Symposium and Mentoring Conference. Photo: First-place winners Joshua Patterson and Destiny Davis pose with Dr. Mazen Shahin, director of the University's AMP Program The award-winning scholars—which included two first-place honors—were among a delegation of 32 Delaware State University students who attended the conference, which was held Nov. 10 at the Sheraton University City Hotel in Philadelphia. The winning scholars from Delaware State University and their presentations: Joshua M. Patterson, 1st Place in the Physical Sciences/Graduate Oral Presentation category. The Ph.D. Applied Chemistry candidate from Dover gave a presentation on “The effect of Body pH on the size, stability and surface charge of chitosan-tri-polyphosphate nanoparticles for oral drug delivery in a model digestive system.” He won a $500 prize. His research advisors were Dr. Cherese Winstead and Dr. Kimberly Milligan. Destiny J. Davis, 1st Place in the Agriculture Science/Poster Presentation category. A junior Forensic Biology major from Baltimore, Md., she presented a poster on “Gene expression analysis in chickens supplemented with pre-biotic in ovo challenged by heat.” She won a $350 prize. Her research advisors were Dr. Anna Slawinska and Dr. Maria Siwek, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Poland. Erykah A. Leno, 3rd Place in the Life & Biological Sciences/Poster Presentation category. A junior Pre-Veterinary major from Baltimore, Md., Ms. Leno presented a poster on “Gene Expression analysis in pigs supplemented with beneficial microorganisms.” Her research advisors were Dr. Anna Slawinska and Dr. Maria Siwek, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Poland. Norwoh Kemokai, 3rd Place in the Agriculture Science/Poster Presentation category. A senior Forensic Biology major from Staten Island, N.Y., Ms. Kemokai presented a poster on “Estimation of Nuclear DNA content of Ononis Genus using flow cytometry.” She received a prize of $150. Her research advisor was Dr. Iwona Jedrzejczyk, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Poland. Aysiah Stamper: Honorable Mention, Physical Sciences//Poster Presentation category. A Chemistry/Pre-Professional major from Clayton, Ms. Stamper presented a poster on “Rehabilitation of distal radius fractures through wrist-healing devices.” She received a prize of $100. Her research advisor was Dr. Stanislaw Jung, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Poland Malia N. Green, Honorable Mention, Biological Science/Research Poster Presentation category. A senior biological science major from Dover, Ms. Green presented a poster on “The implementation of a pathway to transition uncomplicated seizure patients seen in the emergency department to outpatient/care.” Her research advisor was John Pollard, MD, Christiana Care Health System. Mr. Patterson is a part of the University’s Bridge to Doctorate Program, and will represent the Philadelphia AMP region at the upcoming National Bridge to Doctorate Conference. Ms. Davis, Ms. Leon, Ms. Komokai and Ms. Stamper all did their project during their summer research experiences at the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Poland over the last two years. Dr. Mazen Shahin is the director of the University’s AMP Program and its Bridge to Doctorate Program.
