Research, Ride Alongs, and Real Life Experience: Finding Your Calling

Research, Ride Alongs, and Real Life Experience: Finding Your Calling
Posted By: Dixie Somers on November 21, 2018

After high school, the pressure is on to start figuring out what you want to do with your life. For some people, they will go to college and ponder a major. Others will jump right into the workforce and try to carve out a path to some kind of successful career from the ground on up the corporate ladder. Still others are not sure what their calling in life happens to be. The following are some ways you can start to find an answer to that important question.

What Are Your Goals?

One way to help you determine what your calling in life happens to be is to start by outlining a few goals you want to achieve in life. If you want to be wealthy, then this may require a better than average education to land the right high earning career opportunity. If you are passionate about something like art, then you may need to work with people who can mentor you in specific artistic methods or on how the business of being a successful artist works. Whatever your interests are in life, it often helps to write them out and use these items as a guide for helping you choose a career that will enable you to achieve the goals you most want to achieve in life.

Informational Interviews

If you really are not sure what you want to do as a career, then you could try going on a few informational interviews. This is a great opportunity to ask a business owner or a manager of a company what it is like to do the kind of work they are involved in performing.

By getting the inside scoop, from someone who is already working in a field you might be interested in pursuing, you will be able to get a better idea of whether or not this is the kind of work you can see yourself doing long term.

Volunteering

If you really want to see if you are cut out for a specific kind of job, you could always consider to offer to volunteer or be an intern for a company. By volunteering, you will get first-hand knowledge and work experience, too. Even though you will not be paid during this time, it may impress someone to hire you or to give you a letter of recommendation in return for all your hard work.

Education and Certification

Most jobs require a bit of education and certification to provide you with a background in the kind of job you are interested in doing. For example, if you know you like to drive and operate machinery, taking an auto heavy rigid vehicle course could help you become certified to work with machinery but also investigate that field. Since not just anyone can operate larger machinery, the certification is necessary to be skilled at the job as well as safe.

Knowing what you want to do with your life can be a difficult question to answer. It is not always clear what the best career path to choose happens to be. You may have to try a few different work-related opportunities out first before you settle on a specific career choice that is right for you. Along the way, it helps to get work experience and pick up a few useful skills to make yourself more employable. This will in turn give you far more options to choose from as you become more skilled and develop a strong work ethic.
