SACSCOC Reaffirms Accreditation of Johnson C. Smith University

SACSCOC Reaffirms Accreditation of Johnson C. Smith University

Regional Association Issues Stamp of Approval for Institution and Education Programs

Johnson C. Smith University today announced the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaffirmed its accreditation of the university – confirming the high quality of education JCSU provides to 1,500 students annually.

“Johnson C. Smith University has been a beacon in higher education for 151 years,” said University President Clarence D. Armbrister, who took over leadership earlier this year. “We are gratified the quality of our educational programs, faculty and leadership has again been recognized and that our accreditation has been reaffirmed.”

With enrollment growing steadily to 1,565 students this year, JCSU has maintained its accreditation since 1933. Accreditation is important in higher education because it confirms the quality and integrity of institutions and their programs and permits students to access federally subsidized financial aid.

In reaffirming accreditation, the SACSCOC Board of Trustees during its annual meeting today also removed the sanction of probation imposed last year.

“Congratulations are in order for our faculty, staff and our new president who have worked hard to demonstrate the excellence of the education JCSU provides,” said JCSU Board Chair Shirley J. Hughes. “Accreditation is an accolade that helps illuminate what a significant asset JCSU is to this community and to North Carolina.”

JCSU’s endowment has grown to $68 million, and the university last year saw an increase of $2.5 million in its unrestricted operating net assets. The institution also recently completed a comprehensive fundraising campaign that brought in $160 million, thanks to the generosity of alumni, businesses and other donors in Charlotte and beyond.

JCSU has been named a “High Potential University” by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has partnered with the university on a variety of programs. The college offers everything from liberal arts and technology-based bachelor’s degrees, to a master’s degree in social work, to online courses and non-credit bearing certificate programs.

President Armbrister, who previously worked at Girard College, Johns Hopkins University and Temple University, has reiterated JCSU’s commitment to providing “gap funding” for students who cannot afford tuition despite federal subsidies. On average, JCSU students face a gap of about $5,000 a year – which costs the university more than $5 million annually.

“Johnson C. Smith will continue to make higher education accessible to talented, hard-working students who deserve the opportunity to grow and achieve,” Armbrister said. “We are molding the next generation of leaders and are doing everything we can to ensure that those young people who want the kind of educational experience we offer are able to acquire it.”
