Posted By: Will Moss on April 04, 2005 Former Jackson State Golfer, Tim O'Neal, To Tee-Off At PGA Event by Wallace Dooley, w.dooley@swac.org published on Mar 31, 2005 Tim O'Neal BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tim O'Neal, former player at Jackson State University and four-time SWAC Golfer of the Year, has received a sponsor's exemption from the Professional Golfer's Association and will participate in the BellSouth Classic at the TPC at Sugarloaf in Duluth, GA. He's scheduled to tee-off today at 8:30a.m ET. A native of Savannah, Georgia, O'Neal played under the tutelage of Jackson State coach Eddie Payton from 1994-97. Tim played on four SWAC Championship teams and captained two. He was twice the Top Individual Medalist at the National Minority Golf Championships and 1996 he lead the nation (NCAA) in stroke average. This will be O'Neal's second nationwide tour exemption with the PGA. He just missed gaining his 2005 PGA TOUR card by a single stroke at the 2005 National Qualifying Tournament. O'Neal, who turned pro in 1997, is in his rookie season on the Nationwide Tour in 2005. His only career start on the PGA TOUR was a missed cut at the 2002 WORLDCOM Classic-The Heritage of Golf. O'Neal has also played on the Golden Bear Tour, Hooters Tour and the Maverick Tour. He was the co-winner of the 2003 John O. Classic on the Golden Bear Tour Summer Series. Zach Johnson is the tournament's defending champion. Television coverage begins Thursday at 4 pm. ET on USA Network. NOTE: PGATOUR.com contributed to this article.
