Just Graduated from College? 4 Tips for Surviving Actual Adulthood

Just Graduated from College? 4 Tips for Surviving Actual Adulthood
Posted By: Anica Oaks on January 07, 2019

If you've just graduated from college, then you should be feeling very proud of yourself. Hours of studying and listening to lectures have paid off in the form of having a diploma to your name. However, you have a long road ahead of you. Here are four tips for surviving actual adulthood.

Realistic Job Expectations

Were you expecting to walk right off the graduation stage and into an executive position? That might be a nice fantasy, but it's probably not going to happen. You don't want to aim too low about your job expectations, but you need to be willing to start small. Look for entry-level positions that you would be qualified for and send out resumes and cover letters that emphasize your qualifications. Also, remember the importance of networking in the job market. It will be likely that your next job will come as a result of a referral from a family member or friend.

Healthy Social Circles

Navigating post-college life can be incredibly stressful. Sometimes you may want to hide from the world. However, isolating yourself is only going to make things more difficult. You want to make sure that you are continuing your existing social circles or developing healthy new ones. (Avoid toxic personalities as much as possible.) Try to organize weekly hangouts with friends. Just a few hours of socializing can make a great difference in terms of your mental health.

Frugal Living

Money management skills are essential no matter how much you earn. As a new graduate, your income is likely fairly limited. You may not thrilled about your tiny budget, but this is a good thing. The less money you have, the more careful you need to be with it, and you will have the opportunity to learn useful budgeting skills. You also need to think about investing in retirement. For this reason and more, you should consider seeking out a financial planner. NJ financial planning can help you understand where your money should go.

Life Skills

There are some things that they don't teach you in college, not because they're not useful, but because it's assumed you'll learn them on your own. These include things like cooking healthy meals and doing laundry. If you've been living on your own for a while, it's likely that you already know how to do some of these things. However, there's no limit to the skills you can learn. You can find how-to guides online, including YouTube videos. You can also reach out to your parents or other older adults to give you more hands-on training.

All the challenges that await you out of college might seem daunting, but there were classes and tests you never thought you'd be able to pass until you did. Treat adulthood like you did college by remembering how much completing your assignments and being punctual matters. Just like how you came closer to your diploma through consistent discipline and effort, you'll get closer to adulthood through consistent discipline.
