Who, What, and Where: 5 Careers in Business

Below are five jobs in the business world that offer a potential for a long career. SalesMost businesses make their money by selling their products or services. A company's sales force is the team that goes out and tracks down the leads to bring sales into the company. This is usually a job for outgoing people that aren't afraid to strike up a conversation. These roles are exciting because they are usually commission-based and favor motivated people. Sales jobs can be found nationwide, but often require some travel. Human ResourcesAny business that employs others needs somebody to manage the process of having employees. The human resources (HR) department is typically responsible for overseeing all manner of functions including hiring, firing and everything in between. Most companies have their own HR department and jobs can be found virtually anywhere. The best candidates are usually people those with understanding and empathy and who enjoy working with diverse groups. Project ManagementWhen companies have complex projects that they need to deliver they often turn to Project Managers (PM's). These projects can vary greatly, sometimes as internal work and other times working with customers. PM's are usually highly process and detail oriented and are unintimidated providing updates to executive leadership. Project management roles are common with large companies, but especially those needing information technology or construction projects. AccountingBusinesses receive and dispense great sums of cash and require a team to process those transactions into and out of the business. Enter the accountants. These staff members are highly detail oriented and ensure that all the numbers add up. With an expected increase of 86,000+ new accounting jobs in the next five years, these jobs can be found nationwide and with virtually every kind of business. ConsultingCompanies often want an outside eye to review them and hire consultants to provide recommendations on how to improve. Consultants will usually develop expertise in a specific industry and often work in groups as they move from assignment to assignment. The best consultants are usually very comfortable interacting with executive leadership and making recommendations. Consulting roles can be found in most major cities and heavy travel is almost always expected. A career in business can provide stability and a solid future.
