Trucker Education: 4 Tips for Drivers

Trucker Education: 4 Tips for Drivers
Posted By: Dixie Somers on February 14, 2019

If you are a truck driver, then you need to do everything you can to make sure you are continual learning. Not only is it going to help you make more money as your career goes on, but it also helps you avoid mistakes that other truckers make. Consider these four tips below to help you on your journey of ongoing education.

Health

Sitting a lot can be hard on your health and overall wellness. Of course, as a truck driver, you do not always have a choice about how long you’re sitting. You will be sitting virtually every moment that you are working. The key is to have a way to counteract this. Try taking frequent breaks. During your breaks, even if it’s just for a minute or two, you can do a few stretches and exercises to encourage circulation and stretch your body.
Try doing yoga and stretching any aching muscles. This will stretch out and strengthen your back and also help to relieve pain. As you change your positions, this will help to take stress off of tired muscle groups.

Sleep Management

Sleep is essential for the human body. It allows you to rest and relax to help prevent physical and mental exhaustion. However, long drives behind the wheel require just the opposite. The key is to learn tricks to fall asleep quickly. This will allow you to take full advantage of the time you have to sleep in between legs of your journey. Look into strategies like distracting yourself, breathing exercises, and using calming scents. Without the proper amount of rest, your health will suffer, work will be more difficult, and driving becomes significantly more dangerous.

Weather and Conditions

There is no avoiding the fact that you will encounter bad weather on the road. Weather is everywhere and every climate will have its pros and cons. If you know how to handle yourself and your truck when you hit every type, you won't panic in times of trouble. Rather, you can be the calm in the storm while moving toward your destination.
How do you prepare yourself for the unexpected? Research driving techniques and become familiar with your own vehicle. Taking commercial driving refresher courses can also add to your preparation and knowledge base. Additionally, sometimes the risk of driving through isn’t worth the time you’ll save. You should become familiar with what kinds of weather are too dangerous to drive in. Sometimes the risk of driving through isn’t worth the time you’ll save. Make sure you stay familiar with forecasts in the areas you’ll be driving and any alternate routes that could take you around severe weather. If a bad situation becomes even more dangerous, don’t be afraid to pull over and wait it out.

Understanding Legalities

Read up on laws specific to 18-wheelers and commercial truck driving and what to do in the case of an accident. Having a legal plan when things go south will help you stay out of a lot of trouble. It also gives you peace of mind. You will know that you can act quickly instead of putting yourself at risk. Don’t be afraid to invest in 18 wheeler accident attorney services if you’re unsure about any situation that might arise.

Being a top notch trucker is possible. The key is to always improve your approach and build upon what you know. There’s always something else to learn. If you do this, you can be more valuable to the company you drive for as well as yourself. Never stop learning and use the education above as a way to get you to the next level in your career.
