Spike Lee is one of the most talented and inspiring filmmakers of the past fifty years. In his nearly three decade career, Spike Lee has spearheaded films like Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X and 25th Hour. In addition, he has served as a mentor and inspiration for so many along his journey. Despite his outstanding work and undeniable talent, Spike Lee had never won an Academy Award. However, that all changed on February 24th at the 91st Academy Awards in Hollywood.

Spike Lee has officially won his first ever Academy Award. The New York native took home the award for “Best Adapted Screenplay” in celebration for his work on BlackKklansman. Along with Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee took the stage to accept the award. While giving his acceptance speech, Spike Lee gave one of the more heartfelt acceptance speeches in recent memory. The talented filmmaker not only honored his colleagues, but he also paid homage to those who came before him. Spike Lee took time to shout out Historically Black Colleges, his Black ancestry and his family. Watch the full acceptance speech above and be sure to keep up with our winners list throughout the night.
