Known for her iconoclastic bald head a look that is now more popular since Ryan Coogler's Oscar nominated film "Black Panther" which took home academy awards this year with Ruth Carter winning "Best Costume Design" and Hannah Beachler winning for "Best Production Design" with both women making history as the first black women to win in those categories. Entertainment journalist and red carpet Tanisha LaVerne Grant was right on message. With a look that takes her right into "Black Panther's" dora milaje tribe Tanisha wore a custom made black ostrich feathered gown by designer Lisa Jn Marie paired with black elbow length leathered opera gloves by Kiki De Montparnasse and stiletto slippers by Balmain. Born in St. Lucia, Lisa moved to Southern California at age 14 where she went on to complete her high school and college education. In 2008, she earned her Bachelor's in Clothing and Textile Design from California State University, Long Beach. Some of Lisa's design aesthetics derive from color, unique prints, nature, and 1920's glamour. Over the years, she has perfected her skills in pattern making, draping, sewing, samples, fittings and alterations - this was due in part to creating a myriad of custom designs for personal clients. Lisa has also worked on film sets as a costume designer which allowed her to channel her creative side without restrictions. Lisa's passion is to birth her ideas, to improve her skills and to ultimately create her own collection that caters to women of all types - as strong, confident women serve as her ultimate inspiration. ABOUT THE CONTRUCTION OF THE GOWN The construction of the dress began with the layering of tulle, draped on a bias in a vertical form to create the skirt. This ensured that the dress will have not only volume but movement. A v-shaped sweep train was constructed with the tulle. A heavy Satin fabric was used for the lining, which was attached to the skirt and train. A halter top with pleats for fit was draped and sewn to the skirt by hand to form the dress. Once the fit was perfected on the dressform based on your measurements, the feathers were ready be added on. The type of feathers used where rooster saddle for the top and 14 to 17 inch ostrich plumes for the shirt. First I began with sewing the ostrich plume feathers by hand one at a time strategically to obtain full coverage. Once all the feathers were added onto the skirt, the rooster saddle feathers were stitched on vertically to the top to form a v-shap neckline. Additional feathers were individually added to the to make it fuller. Finally, the Zipper was hand-stitched in the back and hook and eyes added on the back of the neck for closure. A velvet strap used to finish the edging of the top was left to hang loose on the back for optional styling.
