She was also the first (and perhaps the only) reporter to bring a successful discrimination lawsuit against her former employer, the powerful Los Angeles Times in 1981, thus changing the paper’s hiring practices forever. Both her career as an award-winning business writer and as a business owner spans nearly 50 years. Shaw has—either by herself or with partners—owned retail, wholesale, and manufacturing businesses and been involved in the development of dozens more. She was a founding member of the Black Public Relations Society, Inc, and she was recently honored by the L.A.
