Langston Hughes, my late Uncle and Lincoln University

Langston Hughes, my late Uncle and Lincoln University

Langston Hughes, my late Uncle and Lincoln University…

Today was a great day for me – I was at Lincoln University on a spiritual pilgrimage with both my late Uncle and Langston Hughes.

In addition , I’m proud to announce, Ms. Carla Sarratt, Director of the Langston Hughes Memorial Library will be archiving my work in Photography, Film and essays at the university for exhibition, study and research.

Lincoln University’s is part of a growing list of Universities which will be archiving my work – I feel really honored.

As a young boy I was a newsboy for the Amsterdam News In Harlem.

Accordingly, I shined shoes and sold the Amsterdam News.

My late grandfather made the shoeshine box for one of my late uncles in 1932 and it was passed unto me as a young boy.

With my shines, a person would receive a copy of the news.

On the days I was shining shoes, I would first go to 127th where both Langston Hughes and my Uncle lived (they were neighbors ) and would often find them talking on the steps to Langston Hughes’ Brownstone.

I would give both a copy of the news and give them a shine.

Both men not only attended Lincoln University - they were also Beta Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Of course, I would sit and listen to all they were discussing involving our race of people and the civil rights issues affecting us.

In that tradition, and performing my pilgrimage essay, I always pose the same way with the shoeshine box… This location is the Langston Hughes Memorial Library and Archives at Lincoln University.

The photography you’re viewing, I’ve taken in the same fashion with my shoeshine box, wearing something from Howard University, at every location where Langston Hughes lived from Joplin Missouri, Lawrenceville Kansas, to Cleveland Ohio, to Chicago to New York.

It’s because of these two men, I feel myself a legacy to Lincoln University.
