Appointment: Late May – mid August; four positions available

The American Council on Education’s (ACE) represents the interests of campus executives and leaders of higher education associations and organizations, ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives.

ACE’s Internship Program is a cohort experience reporting to the Office of the President, and interns are assigned to various departments throughout the Council. The program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students ‘real-world’ work experience within a leading national higher education association. The summer 2019 cohort will include professional development sessions with current ACE staff, a DC outing, and presentations at the conclusion of the program. The internship program is inclusive of all learners and is aligned with ACE's Strategic Framework.

Job duties and requirements for specific internship experiences in the summer of 2019 are listed below. Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or recently completed, an undergraduate or graduate degree program.


•Marketing Internship: The marketing intern will have an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge to advance their academic goals in the field of marketing communications. The marketing intern will gain a better understanding of the higher education nonprofit marketing space and build positive professional/networking relationships. The marketing internship provides an opportunity to apply academic learning of the marking communication discipline to actual practice in ACE’s marketing department. The three main areas of focus for the internship are data analytics, research, and social media. The intern will learn about and provide support for the CRM (customer relationship management) system, the email deployment tool (Microsoft Dynamics), email marketing, and ACE annual meeting 2020.


•Advancement (Fundraising) Internship: The advancement internship includes enhanced data management, writing, critical thinking and research skills, coupled with facilitating an increase in understanding of the Non-Profit Advancement profession. The advancement intern will conduct research on foundations, corporations and other entities supporting equity, access and completion for postsecondary education students.



The intern also will work closely with the Advancement specialist on data management and preparing for CRM migration, along with grants management. The intern will also gain familiarity with fundraising strategies and tactics related to engaging corporations and foundations. Lastly, the intern will help to review and edit concept papers, sponsorship and grant proposals. In addition to activities directly related to ACE, Advancement will provide opportunities for the Intern to meet with other NGOs in the D.C. region as an introduction on their advancement activities.


•The Department of Government Relations and Public Affairs (DGPA) Internship: The DGPA intern will learn about government relations and higher education advocacy. The intern will attend congressional hearings, shadow ACE staff on meetings, complete at least one research project which may focus on the Higher Education Act, and complete departmental administrative tasks. The DGPA intern will gain a better understanding of the government relations profession. DGPA is seeking an enthusiastic student who is interested in learning about government relations and a wide range of issues in the public policy sphere, is studying political science or a related major, and has a high level of professionalism.


•Office of the President Internship: The selected individual will gain knowledge of the higher education field and how associations serve the needs of the university and college administrators. The Office of the President intern will conduct research on public policy, assistant in drafting talking points for the President’s various speaking engagements and brainstorm additional methods of member engagement. The office of the president seeks and intern who has an interest in higher education, a curiosity about Washington, DC and public policy and has the ability to have fun in a fast-paced environment.
