That fact is a common reason why many people prefer to purchase a late-model used car instead of a new one. It’s a sound principle, but there are other reasons why it’s a good idea to buy used. The Risk Is GoneIt used to be that the classic “buyer beware” scenario was the used car lot, but that is no longer true. With the advent of certified pre-owned (CPO) programs, buyers have greater assurance that they are getting a quality vehicle from a reputable dealer. Better still, many manufacturers offer such long warranties that you’re protected even if there is a problem. Big SelectionThanks to the popularity of leasing programs, many reliable, well-equipped cars are back on the market in a couple of years. Other drivers just like to trade frequently, placing even more low-mileage units on the lot. Altogether, this changing structure of the market is creating a big supply of late-model, low-mileage vehicles that have many years of reliable service ahead of them—at big savings for the used-car buyer. Lower OverheadNot only do you pay less for a used vehicle, you will also be charged less for things that are based on the car’s value. Taxes and insurance take a nice drop anytime the paperwork shows a little more age or a little less value. That big chunk of depreciation that hits when you buy a new car also eats a hole in the taxable value, along with the few thousand miles and couple of years that it accumulates before trade-in. Longer LifespansMany people have avoided used cars out of concern that a few years and a few thousand miles have made a big dent in the vehicle’s expected life. Today, though, a car with 40,000 or even 50,000 miles is really just getting started. Mileage is just a number anymore, and it’s a number that matters far less than the price. Manufacturers are also providing better support for earlier models, eliminating reliance on generic knock-offs. If, for example, you need Mitsubishi parts for even one of their older cars, you can find them. When you have an eye toward saving money, there are lots of opportunities to cash in. Don’t subject yourself to sticker shock by shopping for a brand-new car. Step over to the pre-owned lot and select a model that will cost less in both purchase price and operation.
