The famous all-men's school will begin welcoming transgender students who identify as men in 2020 as per a new policy.

In a historic HBCU moment, Saturday, Morehouse College announced that it will begin admitting transgender students who identify as men in 2020. Morehouse, the only historically black all-male college in America, confirmed that its board of trustees approved the policy on Saturday.

The NY Daily News reports that the new policy, known as the Gender Identity Admissions and Matriculation Policy, applies to all students who enroll in the private college by the fall 2020 semester.
The announcement comes after Spelman College, a private historically black all women's school in Atlanta, adopted a similar policy in 2017.

Under the new policy, Morehouse will consider “applicants who live and self-identify as men, regardless of the sex assigned to them at birth,” for admission. The college will not, however, consider women or “those assigned as male at birth who identify as women.”
The policy also affects students who transition while enrolled at the college.

“Once admitted, students are expected to continue to self-identify as men throughout their matriculation at Morehouse,” the policy reads. “If a student transitions from a man to a woman, that student will no longer be eligible to matriculate at Morehouse.”

According to Time Magazine, Morehouse officials hailed the move as an important step toward a more inclusive campus while affirming its mission to educate and develop men.

Morehouse is an iconic college that counts the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., filmmaker Spike Lee and former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson as its alumni.

It bills itself as the “college of choice for black men” that has instilled leadership skills in generations of African American men.

“I think Morehouse having the courage to speak to issues of masculinity in today’s environment is important,” Morehouse College President David Thomas told The Associated Press. “For 152 years, the world has, in some way, seen Morehouse as the West Point of black male development.”

Even with the new policy in place, Morehouse will continue to use “masculine pronouns” which it refers to as the “language of brotherhood.”
Human Rights Campaign spokeswoman Sarah McBride told the Associated Press more schools are beginning to update admissions guidelines to ensure transgender students feel welcomed.

Terrance Dixon, Morehouse vice president for enrollment management, told CNN:
"The ratification of this policy affirms the College's commitment to developing men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service."

"In a rapidly changing world that includes a better understanding of gender identity, we're proud to expand our admissions policy to consider trans men who want to be part of an institution that has produced some of the greatest leaders in social justice, politics, business, and the arts for more than 150 years," he continued.

Human Rights Campaign spokeswoman Sarah McBride told the Associated Press more schools are beginning to update admissions guidelines to ensure transgender students feel welcomed.
“Young people are incredibly supportive of LGBT equality, including transgender equality,” McBride said. “Schools are responding in kind. In many ways, our college campuses look like the country we'll have in 10 or 15 years. There are a lot of reasons for hope.”
