WHO OR WHAT IS A TEAM PLAYER?

Using sports, let's review it from that angle in considering the number of players on a team working towards the same goal! So, what is the main objective or goal? In many cases, there are two opposing teams fighting and competing for the win – at all cost. To win! Fairly or by any means necessary? We should strive objectively by taking into consideration all the rules and regulations for a fair game with integrity. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always take place. While in school, I always dreaded being assigned to a group for completing team projects; especially when you were not allowed to pick the members of your team for a successful outcome. There's nothing like having to work with an individual who never pulls his or her own weight and is always looking for ways to cut corners. Because there is a lack of interest, ability or willingness on their part, it also impacts your grade! So, you take the lead for doing all the work while all the credit is directed towards them for your accomplishments. This same scenario often plays out in many office environments where visibility is the culprit and you are forced and expected to sacrifice your own personal aspirations or career path for the goals or objectives of the organization. Depending upon the desired objective to win or to always be right when you are wrong, arrogance steps in and takes center stage by using deceit, manipulation, intimidation and trickery to achieve those organizational goals which goes against your individual principles and values. Because you refuse to go along to get along in not allowing your integrity to be compromised, you are labeled as not being a team player. Other examples (to name a few) of being labeled "not a team player:" **Unwillingness to socialize and attend office parties. **Unwillingness to stay over and attend after office activities. **Unwillingness to laugh at bad and inappropriate jokes in the office. **Unwillingness to join in on the bullying of others. **Unwillingness to be a YES person. A group of people constituting one side a context or competition. -----Objective of a team: To harness or yoke together in a team. To join in cooperative activity. Player: One who takes part in a game, an actor or performer. A person who plays a game (sports). A performer in a drama (actor). A person who plays a musical instrument. A gambler. -----A reproducing device or object; such as, record player, tape player, tape deck or set, video cassette recorder (VCR) Team player: One who subordinates personal aspirations and works in a coordinated effort withother member of a group or team in striving for a common goal. -----Key objective: Subordinates personal aspirations. An Intro to Henri Fayol (1841-1925): Subordination of Individual Interests to General Interest is one of Fayol's fourteen administrative principles where any individual's interest that conflicts with an organizational interest must be subordinated to the interests of the organization. The organization must find ways to reconcile the tension between individual and organizational interests.
