Texas Southern University’s chapter of the American Marketing Association Place in the top 10 at international competition

Members of Texas Southern University’s American Marketing Association chapter traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for the 41st International Collegiate Conference. The Jesse H. Jones School of Business marketing majors competed in several competitions, placing first in the following: Top Small Chapter with the most donation on #GivingTuesday, Excellence in Execution of their Marketing Week Activities, and Best Overall Exhibit by Student Choice/Vote.

“It feels amazing,” said AMA advisor Dr. Delonia O. Cooley when describing the team’s win. “I am so proud of my students. They worked really hard to achieve this success.”

Because of their Annual Report, which covers how the chapter executed programming throughout the year, students were able to place as one of the Top 10 chapters out of more than 380 chapters. Their score of 90 out of 100 solidified their high ranking, making them the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to mark this accomplishment.

“It is emotionally fulfilling to know that hard work really does pay off,” said Cooley. “They are a Top 10 chapter and won many awards that were voted on by other students.”

Devin Harris, the chapter’s secretary, said, “I can’t tell you how excited I am that people now know who we are, where we are, and that we are a force to be reckoned with.” Cooley, who has served as the chapter’s advisor for 14 years, said this award has been many years in the making and AMA alumni are excited because they understand how hard it was to achieve this level of success.

“We have been so fortunate to have Dr. Cooley as our advisor,” said team Co-President Javona Burton, “With someone working with you and for you like that, you can’t help but want to win big!”

“She has pushed us and pulled us even when we didn’t see it. She has always known we would be great, and now, look at us!”

Advisor Cooley is the sitting president of the Collegiate Chapters Council that oversees all 388+ chapters, as well as the co-chair of the conference. “There hasn’t been a woman of color in either role in over 15+ years, and never at the same time,’ said Cooley, “This makes the win even sweeter.”
