Distracted Driving: 4 Common Things That Divide Your Attention on the Road

Distracted Driving: 4 Common Things That Divide Your Attention on the Road
Posted By: Anica Oaks on May 01, 2019

Probably the first instruction you ever received on driving involved the words “Keep your eyes on the road.” for today’s drivers, though, distractions are everywhere. As a result, we’ve been lulled into complacency by the very dangerous assumption that we won’t have a problem. This type of thinking can catch up to you very quickly, so think about how you can eliminate these four common distractions.

Cell Phones

This is the obvious first choice. Calls are bad enough, but with so many apps, our phones are rarely far from our minds--and our hands. Navigation, music, and dozens of other possibilities are right at our fingertips, pleading with us to look away for “just a second.” Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.

Satellite Radio

Most of us grew up with an AM-FM unit that offered maybe five or six options that appealed to us. A quick trip through the presets (by feel) and we had settled on a station. With satellite radio, there are hundreds of stations, and we can’t seem to resist looking at the display to see what’s on. Preset a few favorites and make changes only when stopped. You will expand your musical horizons if you don’t like a song.

Other Drivers

The more distracted other drivers are, the more we worry about them wandering into our lanes. We seem to spend a lot of time double-checking everybody around us to make sure they aren’t about to cause an accident. While it’s beneficial to be alert and defensive in traffic, there’s no need to rubberneck a passing car in hopes that the driver is using a cell phone. You’re just as guilty!

Roadside Distractions

Highway signs and billboards are supposed to require only a quick glance, but there is often much more to the story. Travelers in new areas should review navigation before they head out so that they don’t have to worry so much about highway signs. And even the most picturesque scenery, the cleverest billboards, and the most unusual fellow motorists are still a dangerous distraction when you’re at the wheel.

Driving a car with any distractions at all is a dangerous proposition. A good car accident attorney can cite many cases where accidents resulted when a driver got too busy doing something other than driving. Focus on your driving instead of your technology and surroundings so that you can safely reach your destination.
