Get Ready! 4 Ways to Prepare to Get Your Dream Job Now
|
Posted By: Dixie Somers on May 03, 2019 You’ve finally finished school and now you’re finally ready to begin your career. But where do you even start? How do you avoid making mistakes that would derail your whole adult life? Here are four tricks for making sure that you land the career you deserve. Find out What’s out ThereWe’ve all been there: it’s easy to fantasize about the glamorous life you’ll lead after graduation. The truth is that most jobs aren’t fancy, though some are cool and every job is important in its own way. Take some time to research the business landscape in your region. What kinds of companies are located there? Are any of them good fits for your talents? You might end up deciding that you’ll have to move if you want to pursue a certain type of career. It’s better to figure that out in the beginning, when it’s easier to build a move into your long-term plans. Prepare for InterviewsBefore you leave for your interview, research the company. This will help you communicate to your interviewer just how much you want the job. You can’t convincingly claim that you want to work at a company if you’re not sure what kind of company it is. You should also prepare a few questions for your interviewer. This will show him or her that you’ve done your research and that you genuinely want to work there. Another way to prepare for interviews is to settle on one or two good interview outfits. A good rule of thumb is to gauge the formality of the office and go one level higher for the interview. Send a Follow-up EmailHere’s an especially effective trick: send a thank-you note after your interview. Most people don’t do this after interviewing, and it’s an especially good way to stand out and make a good impression. An effective follow-up note should thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. It is also a final chance for you to remind him or her of your talents and reasons why you’d be the right choice for the job. You can also include any other information that slipped your mind during your meeting. Learn from Past InterviewsYou probably won’t get the first job you interview for. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong; it’s a tough job market for new grads. However, as you go on more interviews, you’ll want to take note of what kinds of statements go over well and which ones don’t. Approach each interview as an opportunity to practice your professionalism. Most of all, be patient. It can take a long time to get a good job, but it’s always worth the wait. You’re launching the career that will carry you through the rest of your life, and you want your first real job to be the right one. Take the time to research various companies, invest time in interview prep, follow up, and always learn from your mistakes.
