Routine Vehicle Inspections: 4 Signs Your Tires Need to Be Replaced

In addition, you may struggle to maintain control in bad weather, and you could even experience a blowout that causes an accident. Knowing when it’s time to replace the tires is key to protecting yourself and your family, so consider these signs that it’s time to get a new set. Deep WearTires have a limited life, measured in miles. Find the paperwork that came with them and see how many miles they are expected to last, and then see how much of that is left (if any). This figure can be trumped by your actual wear, though, so inspect the tires. Place a penny in the groove upside down and see if the top of Lincoln’s head is blocked. If not, it’s time for tires. Smooth Areas or Visible WiresCertain parts of the tire will wear faster than others, particularly the outer edge of the tread. If it has worn smooth, it’s time to replace them. If there are any steel wires visible, go to the tire store immediately. A failure in these could immediately threaten the integrity of the tire and put you in real danger. Uneven WearYour tire should have the same wear all the way around. In other words, the top should be worn the same as the front and the back as you see them in a parked position. If you notice that there are irregularities in this characteristic, there are issues with the tire and potentially with the vehicle itself. New rubber and a thorough inspection are in order. Bulges & Swollen AreasThe main component keeping your tire in the correct round shape is the steel wires under the tread. These can sometimes suffer damage that allows part of the tire to swell out of proportion, resulting in a bumpy, shaky ride. A tire like this should not be used for anything except to drive straight to the shop for replacement. Many other factors can make it necessary to replace your tires. You can always discuss your situation with reputable tire dealers to find out what they recommend. No matter how well you take care of the rest of your car, you can still be in serious danger with poor tires, so be sure you keep your tread in good condition.
