Why Not Being A Team Player Can Ruin Your Job?

Teamwork has never been as crucial as it is now. This may sound like a cliché, but it is true. Have you ever wondered why being a team player always pops up as one of the main requirements in almost every job description? In fact, we are living in a century of rapid change and development. The world around us, as well as every sphere of our life, is evolving, fundamentally changing the traditional way of things.

The approach to the organization of the labor has also significantly changed. We now live in the era of coworkings and open-spaces, which means that the usual style of work has transformed into a more collaborative, flexible, and self-driven. Modern companies are built on a non-hierarchical basis. Non-hierarchical organization type refuses to assign fixed roles to employees. Instead, it gives more freedom and encourages creativity. Such companies have greater functional diversity. This basically means that employees are encouraged to share ideas and collaborate. Everyone can contribute to a particular project regardless of their roles in the company, and this is why collaborating with other staff members matters!

Importance Of Teamwork In Different Spheres

There are many benefits of being a team player. First of all, it helps individual specialists to evolve their skills. Also, it expands the company’s horizons and boosts idea generation. Finally, it makes the whole process more effective and fun, allowing you to achieve greater goals.

Now let’s look at a few examples that show how important collaboration is in different jobs.

Web Designer

Every business needs a website or an app to reach out to its prospective customers. An appealing website contributes to increased sales and overall success of the company. Thus, the main goal of a web designer is to create a top-notch website.

But does a good result depend only on a web designer? Not really. Although it may seem like one specialist does all the job, in fact, Web designers have to cooperate closely with other specialists including:

  • Web developer;
  • UX/UI strategist;
  • Project manager;
  • Inbound marketer;
  • Content specialist.

Thus, an excellent and fast result is only possible when all the links in this chain cooperate and listen to each other.

Journalist

While many believe that journalism is more of an individual job, this is also not quite true. Modern magazines and newsrooms also strive to develop strong corporate culture and encourage collaboration. Although individual effort is always important, the biggest goals can only be reached through collaboration. This especially applies to creative jobs, as teamwork helps to boost creativity.

On the one hand, there is nothing bad in journalistic individualism as it allows each employee to determine their niche, role in a company, and find a personal voice. However, this becomes a real problem for editors, whose goal is to organize the performance of each individual in order to produce a one-piece, harmonic media product. Teamwork, on the other hand, allows using each of the individualities in the interests of the entire group. It boosts the effectiveness of the workflow and ensures that each employee is moving in the right direction.

Copywriter

The same idea as with journalism also applies to specialists, who create Web content. A copywriter is the one who creates content, but he doesn’t perform the task alone. Normally, a whole group of people contributes to writing a single piece. This group may include marketers, link builders, SEO specialists, content strategists, and writers. When this group has a clearly-defined shared goal, their performance will be most effective. This implies a faster speed of work and better results. What is more, this also applies to freelance copywriters, bloggers, and even essay writers.

HR Manager

Human Resource management is probably the clearest example of teamwork and its importance in the corporate world. We can see HRs cooperate with various departments on a daily basis. A good HR manager never works as an individual. Instead, he collaborates with the company’s authorities to stay updated on the current goals and also keep in touch with members of different departments to understand their needs and any issues that may arise.

SEO Specialist

The task of every SEO specialist is to bring the business’s website to the top of the organic search results. The success in SEO is a result of in-depth analysis of the market, targeting, effort, and… teamwork! The tasks of SEO specialists is closely linked with the functions of web developers, designers, copywriters, and other specialists involved in a particular project.

In order to reach the long-term objectives, all parts of the company’s mechanism must work together. Of course, one specialist could perform several tasks on his own. However, this isn’t even quite as productive as when the colleagues communicate and brainstorm to find a solution for a complex task. This way, solutions appear faster and tend to be more effective.

Based on the examples mentioned above, you can see how teamwork manifests in different professional fields. This explains why modern employers strive to find active employees, who are willing to collaborate in a group. With that being said, you have to admit that not being a team player can significantly reduce your career opportunities.

Final Words

In the modern world, being able to collaborate is key to success. Being a part of a company, each employee is an independent link of a large chain. Each person performs specific tasks, but only a common goal and collaboration can ensure the correct and most productive functionality of the whole mechanism. Moreover, being a team player is what can help you reveal your full potential, so reaching the top is only possible if you know how to be a part of the company.

Mastering the art of being a team player is not an easy task. Acquiring this skill can take lots of time and effort. However, we encourage you to be optimistic! The recipe of success is simple – do never give up and stay true to yourself; after all, everyone can attain this skill if there is enough motivation.
