OAKWOODITES VISIT DETROIT TO BEGIN FILMING DOCUMENTARY

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on June 10, 2019 by Maquisha Mullins, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Integrated Marketing & Public Relations When someone mentions the city of Detroit, there are many images and preconceived notions that people may have in their minds about this iconic locale. Oakwood’s Office of Integrated Marketing & Public Relations (IMPR) is working on a documentary project that will challenge viewers’ current perspectives. The documentary is planned to be completed by late fall semester 2019. The team traveled to Detroit last week and interviewed several young men who are now current students at OU, and their mentor,Toson Knight ’12, who recruited each of them on behalf of the university. This short documentary gives voice to their transformations as Oakwood students and their parents’ feelings about their sons’ college journeys. The IMPR team’s visit to Detroit included a Memorial Day block party at the Burns Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church, which was visited by two-time Super Bowl Champion (with the New England Patriots), Trey Flowers, who is now a defensive end for the Detroit Lions. The NFL star and Huntsville native grew up attending the Madison Mission SDA Church, where his mother is still a member. WJOU provided the music for the event, and Alumni Relations greeted Detroit area alums and friends, including Nancy Coe-Moore, Douglas Brezzell, and Anthony Phillpott. Mrs. Alice Strawbridge was also honored as the eldest alum present at the event. Her family believes she graduated from Oakwood in the 1940s. This trip was God-ordained, led by the Holy Spirit, and unifying for university staff, current students, alumni and incoming students who participated.
