Rickey Smiley’s son, Malik, to play for Alabama State hoops as dad takes over for Tom Joyner

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on July 01, 2019

Rickey Smiley’s son, Malik, will follow in his footsteps at Alabama State. He’ll also be playing ball for ASU.

It’s been a pretty good week for Rickey Smiley.

First the commedian-turned-tv star-turned-radio host was announced as the successor to Tom Joyner, and now one of his sons just picked up a scholarship to play at his alma mater.

Malik Smiley has recieved a scholarship to play basketball at Alabama State, according to his father’s twitter account.

“Dream come true!!!,” Smiley tweeted on Friday. “He worked really hard and is so deserving!!!!”

Malik is a 6’4 guard from Brandenton, FL with solid leaping ability.

Currently the host of the Rickey Smiley Radio Show, the elder Smiley graduated from ASU in 1992 before launching his comedy career which ultimately landed him on television and radio. He’s been the host of his own show for 15 years.

Earlier this week it was announced that he would replace Tom Joyner when the legendary host and Tuskegee alumnus calls it quits at the end of this year.

“It’s an honor to continue the legacy of my boss and frat brother Tom Joyner,” Smiley said via Black America Web. “Not only has he been a friend to my family and me over the years, but we consider him family. Tom’s mentorship has instilled in me valuable wisdom that I will carry with me through this new morning show.”

Like Joyner before him, Smiley is a big-time advocate for HBCUs. He’s a huge supporter of Alabama State, where several of his children attend. Perhaps HBCU sports will get more of a highlight on the new show as well.

Give us a call, Rickey, we know a few guys.
