Job Summary
Reports to: Executive Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Office of University Development (OUD)

Position summary: As the Director of Development, you will be primarily responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual prospects capable of giving $25,000 and above to support the University’s diversity outreach programs. You will report directly to the Executive Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and will work closely with the University of Michigan’s Chief Diversity Officer. In this role, you will play a critical role in driving the funding priorities set by the UM Chief Diversity Officer and are responsible for executing and promoting DEI fundraising benefiting the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) and programs across campus. Frequent travel is required.

This is a full time, term limited position ending after two (2) years from the hire date and is eligible for UM benefits. Before the end of the term limit, it could be considered for a term extension or for transition to an open-ended position.

We also provide fundraising leadership through the stimulation and facilitation of healthy, productive and life-long relationships with our colleagues, alumni, friends, foundations and corporations.

Responsibilities*
Fundraising and Prospect Management for ODEI (70%)

The DOD will primarily focus on fundraising for the priorities of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI). Responsibilities include:
Advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions:
Identify, qualify, and manage a portfolio of approximately 100 prospective donors with the capacity to make gifts of $50,000 and more.
Complete at least 100 personal visits and substantive interactions with prospects and donors each year, and participate in a minimum of 10-15 gift solicitations per year of $25,000 or above.
Strive to meet the development community standards for a senior major gifts officer.


Work with the Prospect Development and Analytics team to gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects.
Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship individually and in partnership with the Stewardship team.
Have a comprehensive understanding of DEI fundraising priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific University needs.
Staff University leadership and develop materials and briefings for meetings, visits or individual contacts and conduct follow-up, as needed.
Responsible for providing fund raising support to the University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative and special programs including but not limited to, Wolverine Pathways, Success Connects, the DEI Innovation Fund, University Diversity and Social Professorships, Collegiate Fellows, and other priorities identified by the Chief Diversity Officer.
Develop and maintain an astute awareness of best practices for engaging diverse constituents and communities and serve as an expert liaison on philanthropy in diverse cultures for the campus community.
Serve as an active team member in the creation and implementation of short-term and long-term fundraising goals and objectives for diversity outreach initiatives.
Gather, record and properly store information about prospects and donors utilizing DART, the University’s donor and alumni tracking database.
Partnership with OUD and Campus Colleagues (20%)

Serve as a subject-matter expert for DEI fundraising. Meet regularly with development colleagues across campus to coordinate and execute strategies, and use experience and knowledge to build awareness and consensus around fundraising for University and unit-based diversity outreach initiatives.
Participate in a meaningful fashion in larger DEI-related campus activities, including retreats and meetings as needed to develop a clear understanding of the University’s broader vision for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to support fundraising priorities. Promote and model culturally competent fundraising practices.
Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and administrators necessary to achieve key goals. Serve as the development staff liaison responsible for fundraising production of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Volunteer Management and Additional Responsibilities (10%)

Recruit, manage and staff volunteer committees, such as the DEI Leadership Council, designed to support fundraising for diversity outreach initiatives. Direct and oversee the development of communications, meeting content, materials, coordinating activity with campus colleagues, and directing volunteer assignments and follow-up.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
