Posted By: How May I Help You NC on December 20, 2019 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), Library and Information Services (LIS) invites applications from dynamic, proactive, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Dean of LIS. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, innovative, user-focused librarian and administrator who will provide leadership to LIS and be committed to the mission, vision, and values outlined in the University's strategic plan. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean of LIS serves as an institutional academic leader with other Deans, the Provost, and campus administrators. The Dean of LIS serves as chief administrative officer of LIS, providing vision, strategic direction, and operational leadership to the unit. The Dean leads LIS in fiscal management, development, and outreach and is responsible for advancing the LIS’ services, technologies, and spaces to meet the needs of 21st century users. The Dean creates an environment that is innovative, student-centered, and supports expert practice and scholarly research. The Dean builds a community that fosters collaboration, communication, and diversity to support the missions of both LIS and the University. The Dean is responsible for the recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and mentorship of all LIS personnel. Currently, the unit has a full-time faculty of 11 and a full-time administrative and civil service staff of approximately 24. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs the selected candidate will: • Ensure the ongoing vitality of LIS, with clear dedication to its practice, mission, and its commitment to research and discovery. • Navigate academic operations with support from the Chancellor and Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to further LIS’ efforts within the campus, system, and broader community. • Collaborate with SIUE Schools and the College of Arts & Sciences and the Southern Illinois University System to serve beyond LIS, acting as an institutional, academic leader. • Have a demonstrable and abiding commitment to ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion within LIS operations and outcomes. Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Administrative -Leads LIS involvement in the University's and LIS strategic initiatives. -Acts as fiscal manager for LIS, making decisions about budget, spaces, and personnel. -Recruits and supervises all full and part-time faculty librarians while overseeing the indirect supervision of administrative and civil service staff. -Collects and uses data to assess library impact of space, services, technologies, and collections to support student learning, faculty teaching, and scholarship. -Supports an outreach plan that embeds the LIS’ presence physically and virtually across campus and in the community. -Advocates for technology-rich collaborative spaces to promote community in teaching and learning. -Collaborates with the SIUE Foundation and the Friends of Lovejoy Library to raise funds to support LIS development efforts. Leadership -Mentors and supports tenure-track faculty librarians through the tenure process. -Invests in ongoing professional development opportunities to support evolving roles for faculty and staff within LIS. -Inspires a rewarding workplace environment that emphasizes excellence, collaboration, and diversity. -Supports faculty librarians in creating policies and procedures to ensure currency in the field and to maintain best practices for an academic library. -Represents LIS on internal and external committees such as Dean’s Council. Library Support Services -Ensures the success of all user populations by providing services and resources to meet their unique needs. -Engages campus and surrounding communities in activities to support research and scholarship. -Encourages the growth of the Information Literacy Instruction Program while modeling the information literacy skillset of a 21st century librarian. -Establishes an online learning environment that promotes the delivery of information literacy skills to distance, graduate, post-traditional, and international students. -Supports the application of new technologies that enhance information delivery and discovery.
