What You Need to Know About Becoming an IT Professional
|
Posted By: Anica Oaks on January 10, 2020 It’s not a big surprise to really anyone that IT is the most in-demand field right now. With so many recent advancements in technology, more and more jobs are being created in this sector. If you’re considering entering into a career as an IT professional, here are some necessary things you should know. Most Positions Require a Bachelor’s DegreeWhen you go to get hired as an IT professional, you’re likely going to need to meet the minimum requirement of having a bachelor’s degree. This degree can typically be in a wide variety of specialties depending on your preference in career choice. Some common bachelor degree examples include computer science and information technology. Many Employers Want to See ExperienceWhen you’re looking to get hired as an IT consultant or any sort of specialist in an IT-related field, employers typically want to see experience. In general, most employers want to see at least three to five years of experience in the IT field. If you want to work for a larger-sized company, expect to invest some time in entry-level and lower-level positions at first. You can likely get away with less experience required for smaller-sized businesses. Certifications Can Give You an AdvantageWith so many students obtaining degrees in the IT field, there’s a lot of competition out there for jobs. To give yourself a great advantage, consider getting various IT certifications. Many businesses will hire those with more certifications as they perceive them as having more IT-based knowledge. Some common certifications you should look into obtaining include Cisco Certified Network Associate, Apple Certified Associate, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and Certified Information System Security Professional. Salaries Can Vary GreatlyIf you take one look at many of the popular job hiring websites, you’ll find tons of listings for IT professionals. However, if you look at the pay rate, you’ll notice that the salaries vary widely depending on the company. It’s important to realize that many smaller-sized businesses simply don’t have the funds to devote to a very experienced IT professional. So, if you plan on investing a lot of your own time and money to get multiple certifications on top of your bachelor’s or master’s degree, then you should aim for getting hired by a larger-sized company who can afford to pay you. Becoming an IT professional can be a great career choice in this day and age. However, before you jump in head first, you should get familiar with this industry. Hopefully, the information above has allowed you to gain some new knowledge about the IT industry in general.
