Posted By: Brandalyn Gill on February 05, 2020 SAVING SINAI:: Brilliant Kindergartner Displaced in Another HISD School Because of Emotional Disturbance Amid 450 Million Mentally Ill :: 97.9 THE BOX, MAGIC 102.1, THE PEOPLE’S WORKSHOP STEP UP TO sponsor the 2020 MLK Jr. Day Mental Health and Literacy Summit While the Rest of Houston – Obviously – Has a Problem Young mother, local HISD (endorsed) self-published author, producing actress, entrepreneur, and community activist, Brandalyn Gill, struggles between three separate diaries – one for herself, one for her 5-year-old, and one for her 5-year old’s behavior at school. She has struggled to gain employment as the kindergartner has been removed from two schools in one school year to obtain the help she needs for emotional disturbance. Falling under code 504 for special education with a brilliant mind, Sinai Gill is like many children suffering with psychosomatic trauma from mental, physical, and spiritual abuse. A pioneer for her daughter’s health, Gill attends a “zoned” school with her daughter every day from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM. She has been sanctioned to a half-day after her mother advocated for months for her daughter’s therapeutic needs. In the midst of begging for Houston’s attention to her 2020 MLK Jr. Day Mental Health and Literacy Summit, Gill feels exhausted and trumped by the fact that the Houston Independent School District and society continues to offer few solutions for “the lower class” in regard to behavioral interventions, especially for those younger than the age of six. “I find it so incredibly disheartening that – according to the World Health Organization – 450 million people suffer from a mental and/or neurological disorder, but the Texas public school system will allow a child to be re-placed into a school where she was illegally suspended as a homeless child four times for up to 90 days while special testing takes place on her behalf. It’s even more frightening that society wants to sweep issues as such ‘under the rug’ when we all know this is an epidemic affecting the globe. My child is not different from any of the other children and people who need therapy and time to heal their wounds instead of turning to pharmaceuticals as a first action. I have been mentally and physically exhausted. I am an independent mother providing adequate care for her separation anxiety and inability to cope causing destructive behavioral patterns I have never witnessed with her before. I truly no longer believe this to be a race thing or an age thing such much as it is a ‘society thing’. I called Family Houston and she would have to wait over a month and a half for care. I called HAWC (Houston Area Women Center) who specialize in trauma and abuse of children and women. They said she would have to be six years of age to be seen. I had to get a referral from her PCP for a child abuse pediatrician just to move her further along. Over 683,000 children were abused by 2015 and statistics are so old that we cannot even track the ages. Truthfully, most child abuse is known to take place before children have reached the age of 10. Abuse at such an early age is like a brain injury but then we want to say the children have ADHD when their little neurons are firing so fast because they have no idea what to do with the pain. It’s criminal [that no one seems to care]”. In the midst of inability to receive adequate funding for her project, happening on January 20 of 2020 (Martin Luther King Junior Day), Gill has become discouraged and lethargic. “Some days it is so hard to control my own frustration with her. It takes so many dynamic tactics and patience to correct her behavior. It is even harder that it was caused by those I trusted and I had no control … until she started opening up almost a year later”, Gill protests, “There was only one slot open in the city at the Harris School as the first semester was coming to a close and we would have had to fork over $34,000. Scholarships there are dried up by May. I had already reported the school to the Texas Education Agency and nothing had been done. It sometimes seems like a hopeless situation”. Gill asks all who have or know someone who has suffered with any mental challenges or discrimination within the public school system to come forward and participate in her fundraiser at www.mlkdaysummit.com. “Radio One and The People’s Workshop have sponsored the project on their event page and have chosen to present the project. Meanwhile, we can’t get the actual city to stand up … for themselves … I won’t lay over and die on this one. She is my daughter and I will fight for her and all other people suffering with trauma. It is a silent killer ruining their ability to live a free life” she cries, “This vicious cycle must stop … The world is our assignment; only we can change it”.
