Apply for Dow Jones News Fund HBCU Digital Media Institute
Posted By: Francine Huff on February 19, 2020

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) has received a $30,000 grant to host the Dow Jones News Fund HBCU Digital Media Institute on May 11-15, 2020. Prof. Francine Huff, the Knight Chair for Student Achievement, applied for the grant to run the institute that will offer a week of training in digital media for 15 students who will be immersed in the latest newsgathering and storytelling techniques. The students will be able to expand skills including podcasting, website design, videography, social media management, data visualization and coding.

Huff will direct the digital media institute, which will take place at the FAMU SJGC building in Tallahassee, Fla.

Other instructors include Michael Grant, Teaching Fellow at Google News Lab; Michelle Johnson, Associate Professor of the Practice, Multimedia Journalism, Boston University; Alicia Hope, Visiting Instructor, FAMU; and Justyn Thomas, Partner and Creative Director, 422 Agency.

“I am thrilled that Dow Jones News Fund has chosen FAMU SJGC to receive this grant and host the boot camp,” said Huff. “The funding will allow us to offer intensive multimedia training that will help prepare students to be more competitive in the job market, as well as take the skills back to their student media outlets.”

The institute is seeking a cohort of sophomores and juniors from HBCU campuses across the country who are interested in learning digital media skills. This group of students will work together to produce a digital media project that includes various digital media content. The Dow Jones News Fund HBCU Digital Media Institute will cover all travel, housing and meals.

“It is exciting to be able to offer this training opportunity to students at SJGC as well as students from other HBCUs,” said Huff.

Students interested in attending the training should submit an application at the registration link by Friday, March 6, 2020, at 5 p.m. EST.
