Delaware State University marching band to perform at Penn Relays

Delaware State University marching band to perform at Penn Relays
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 27, 2020

The Delaware State University “Approaching Storm” ― a high-energy, high-stepping, entertaining collection of talented musicians ― will perform inside Franklin Field as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the participation of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (https://pennrelays.com/news/2020/1/20/penn-relays-hbcu-100.aspx) at the Penn Relays Presented by Toyota.

The Storm will pump up the action on the broadest day of HBCU participation ― Friday, April 24th.

“This is almost certainly the first time in more than a century we’ve had a band play at the Penn Relays,” said Relays Director Dave Johnson. “In more than 50 years of looking at old programs and news clips, the only times I’ve verified a band performing were during the meet in the World War I year of 1918, and for the first three or four years of the meet when a band program would precede the start of the meet.

This should be a terrific occasion during Friday’s events.”

The Storm has represented Delaware State University with pride, enthusiasm and excellence from coast-to-coast and across the seas, including in London, Paris, the Netherlands and China, and in the United States at several NFL stadiums, including Veterans Stadium, M&T Bank Stadium and the Pontiac Silverdome, The band has even graced the stage of the world famous Apollo Theater in New York City as well as on ESPN’s First Take.

"The Penn Relays is an iconic event on the East Coast. We are overjoyed to have the opportunity to perform at this event,” said Dr. Harvey Bullock, Jr., the Director of the Approaching Storm and a 1995 DSU graduate. “This will be a new type of event that we haven’t performed at before, so this is very special for not only for our band program, but for our university as well. We hope that the storm will heighten the already electric atmosphere generated at the Penn Relays. So everyone will need to be prepared ― because the Storm is approaching!”

Pound for pound and sound for sound, Relays attendees will be entertained by the most electrifying band around! Tickets for the 2020 Penn Relays Presented by Toyota went on sale to the general public on Friday, February 21st.
