Posted By: How May I Help You NC on February 28, 2020 MIT’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP) is committed to creating a robust pipeline of students who excel in STEM. For over 40 years, we’ve opened the doors to MIT by offering highly motivated and diverse students the chance to pursue their passion for STEM free of charge. Too often, students’ zip codes play a larger role in determining their educational opportunities than do their abilities. Our mission is to diversify the science and engineering communities by engaging historically underrepresented and underserved middle- and high-school students. Nearly 70 percent of OEOP students come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, 80 percent are underrepresented students of color, and 50 percent are female. A great many of OEOP students will go on to be the first in their family to graduate from college. With more than 2,200 applicants a year, OEOP students pass through an admissions process that is nearly as rigorous and selective as MIT’s. A significant number of OEOP students will go on to be accepted by MIT and other top-tier institutions. Almost all of them will go on to pursue careers in STEM-related fields as researchers, engineers, educators, or entrepreneurs. Watch more videos from MIT: http://www.youtube.com/user/MITNewsOf... The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, and technology; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place. The MIT YouTube channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
