4 Sources to Help Veterans Pay for Higher Education Opportunities
|
Posted By: Anica Oaks on March 06, 2020 Many veterans choose to go back to school after they leave the military. Figuring out how to pay for school can be tough, though. While many do take out loans, there are many other possibilities out there. Below are four sources commonly used by veterans to help pay for higher education opportunities. ScholarshipsThere are more scholarships out there for military veterans than you might imagine. Some of these scholarships are for individuals who served in specific branches, while others might simply be for individuals who choose to pursue higher education after serving. Given that many scholarships go entirely unclaimed, it’s certainly worth your time to check out these opportunities and to apply as soon as possible. The GI BillThe post-9/11 GI Bill can be an incredible tool for those who want to go back to school. You can use this program to go back to school and have virtually all of your expenses paid for during that time. While there are limitations, working with good online colleges for military service members will ensure that your benefits are properly applied and that you can still get a great education at the same time. GrantsThere are also many grants that students can pursue. Though grant programs may not cover all of the costs related to going back to school, those who seek out specific state and federal grants can get a significant portion of their tuition covered. Most college financial aid offices tend to keep tabs of specific grants that might work for certain students, so it may be worthwhile to ask about them when applying to a school. Tuition AssistanceFinally, you may want to look into tuition assistance programs offered by your jobs. Many large companies offer some form of tuition assistance, either through direct programs or through scholarships. Some companies will even pay for an employee’s degree with the requirement that he or she commits to either paying the company back or that he or she will work for the company for a set period of time after graduation. It’s entirely possible to go to school after you have left the military. Whether you use your GI benefits or you seek out alternative methods of financing college, you shouldn’t have to worry about crushing levels of student debt. If you are willing to do the research, you can find a way to help you pay for college on your own terms.
