I finally let go.....please read!

Posted By: Amecia Nichell on April 22, 2006 After almost a whole year of emotional ups and downs, numerous diappointments, un-returned phone calls and arguments........I finally dumped my boyfriend. I realized that I give great relationship advice, except for I never listened to anything that I said. My ex-boyfriend didn't appreciate me and he took me for granted. When I went home for spring break, 3 months since he had last seen me, he didn't come visit me because he said he didn't have gas money. There were a lot of things wrong in our relationship. I was putting in 70% and hewas only giving 30%. But I made excuses for hisbehavior and convinced myself that things would get better, that he would change. But I want everyone to understand what took me almost a year to realize- people don't just change because you want them to change! You should never stay in a relationship with someone because you think things will get better. You're setting yourself up for a big letdown if you do that. You can talk about the problems you're having with your mate, but just that one time. If they see that you're upset, but don't make any changes then, what makes you think that they'll be any differnt in two months? We have to stop seeing what we want to see in our mates and start seeing the truth. I feel so relaxed now that I'm not with my boyfriend anymore. I know it's not easy to end a relationship because you want things to work out. But you have to realize, every person that you date is not meant to be your life-long partner. Some people are just seasonal partners; they're there for a while, but aren't meant to permantly be in your life. I know now that I was lowering my standards my staying with my ex. I knew I wanted more. no, deserved better than him. It's a hard lesson to learn, but it's one you'll never forget. My advce to everyone is to take a good look at your mate- their personality, behavior, everything. If you were a member of the opposite sex, would you want to be like them? If your answer is no or if you hesitate, you should rethink your relationship. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
