Legendary TSU Debate Coach Dr. Thomas F. Freeman died at the age of 100

Posted By: Frederick Roberts on June 07, 2020 Legendary debate coach Dr. Thomas F. Freeman has died at the age of 100 years. Freeman began his career at Texas Southern University in 1949. TSU announced the news of Freeman's death on Saturday, June 6, 2020. Freeman was a philosophy professor, renowned Debate Coach and founded the TSU Debate Team and the Weekend College. In a statement released by Texas Southern University, the administration stated: It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Texas Southern University icon Dr. Thomas F. Freeman. The esteemed debate coach, orator and teacher began his career at TSU in 1949. He worked at the university long after his formal retirement in 1990 and was often on the campus long before others arrived at 7:00 a.m. and he stayed late at night too. During his career, Freeman is credited with having prepared many students, staff and others for careers that needed the gift of public speaking and debating. Among some of his noted students and mentees are US Congresswoman, Barbara Jordan, Bishop James Dixon, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Denzel Washington that sought Freeman's coaching in his preparation for the movie, The Great Debaters. Mayor Turner speaking on his relationship with Freeman, stated that he often called on Dr. Freeman for assistance while he was on the Debate Team at the University of Houston. Turner honored Freeman in 2019 with the Living Legend Award for the first-ever Mayor’s History Makers Luncheon sponsored by Comcast. He also present him a proclamation to the incomparable Dr. Thomas F. Freeman on his 100th birthday and named a day in honor of his many accomplishments. Turner is deeply saddened by his death and will miss his wise conversations. At press time, funeral services are pending and no doubt will be a major event in the City of Houston and at Texas Southern University.
