5 Reasons to Continue Your Medical Education in Quarantine

5 Reasons to Continue Your Medical Education in Quarantine
Posted By: Jennifer James on June 08, 2020

Are you currently in medical school? The recent Covid-19 pandemic has certainly put a damper on many things, including the plans of students all over the world. But this is not the time for you to give up. There are plenty of reasons why you should focus on continuing your medical education.

1. You've Come Too Far to Stop Now

The first thing you should consider is just how much time and effort you have already put into pursuing your goal of a medical career. After all of the study and sacrifice that you have laid on the line, it seems like too much of a waste to give up now. This is all the more true when your skills may be more needed than ever before.

2. There Are Safe Ways to Continue Your Education

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you don't have to risk your health by sitting in a crowded classroom with other students. There are plenty of safe alternatives, such as online CME courses. By taking advantage of these safe alternatives, you can get your education while staying socially distanced.

3. You Need to Pay Off Your Student Loan Somehow

Another factor to consider may seem crass and almost trivial at the present time. But, rest assured, your ability to pay off your student loan in a timely and comfortable fashion is one that will determine the quality of much of the rest of your life. This is not the time to shrug off this looming debt in a cavalier fashion.

Student loans for medical school degrees are some of the most costly. This means that, if you stop your education now, you will be taking on a huge debt with no easily attainable way to make good on it. You don't want to spend the rest of your life drowning in hopeless arrears.

4. Getting Your Degree Makes You Your Own Boss

Wouldn't you like to be your own employer someday? You may have to spend quite some time in residency at a hospital. You may even choose to go on residency for a medical center for the first few years of your career. But you may, in the end, have a dream that you want to realize. This is the dream of owning your own medical practice.

If you want to reach that goal, you need to stay in school. It may be hard to make the adjustment to learning from home without a strict schedule to adhere to. But your ability to adapt to the "new normal" will stand you in good stead for the future. And it will bring you closer to realizing your dream of being your own boss.

5. You Can Help Others in Their Time of Need

Finally, if you really want to be a doctor, it must be because you realize you have a gift to share with others. Restoring a fellow human being to health is one of the most awesome responsibilities that any person can undertake. If you truly feel that you possess this ability, there is no reason not to continue to earn the right to use it.

Now that you have been informed of your alternatives, it's easy to see that there really is no reason to discontinue your education. There is still less need to have to put it on hold. The Covid-19 is severe and must be taken with the utmost seriousness. But with a bit of adjustment and planning, your education can continue.
