How to Become a Medical Assistant After Getting an Unrelated Bachelor's Degree

How to Become a Medical Assistant After Getting an Unrelated Bachelor
Posted By: Anica Oaks on June 17, 2020

College can be a difficult time in your life. In the midst of multiple influences, you may pursue a certain degree only to discover after you graduate that the careers available to you aren't enjoyable. If that has happened to you, a degree as a medical assistant offers a great option for a career change. To help determine your next move, here are some tips to become a medical assistant after getting an unrelated bachelor's degree.

Become an Intern

Many medical offices offer internship programs to access needed help and to provide experience to those interested in the medical field. If you can become an intern, it will get your foot in the door when you seek to further your career. In order to succeed, make sure to show up on time every day and do all that's asked of you, even if it seems unrelated to the medical profession. Even if you don't get hired at the office where you intern, they may be able to give you a reference for a job at another office.

Take the Right Courses

Even if you're knowledgable about a variety of topics, you'll still need some specialized training in order to become a medical assistant. To help expedite this process, an online medical assistant school can provide the training you need on a condensed timeline, all on your schedule.

Even though it might be defeating to go back to school after you've already completed a degree, rest assured that the training you'll receive will put you on the fast track to the career of your dreams.

Accept a Different Job

Though a job as a medical assistant is one of the easiest ways to get into the medical field, there are other jobs available at many doctor's offices to help you if you can't yet find the exact position you want. Front desk clerks, security guards, custodians, lab techs, and a variety of other professionals are required to make an office successful. Even if you aren't doing the duties that you envision, as long as you work hard at your job, you will have the chance to catch the attention of the right people to help you move forward in your career.

Work with the Career Center

Many colleges have career centers to help their students find a job after they graduate. The good news is that you can usually look to the career center for help for some time after you receive your diploma. If you're struggling to find a job that fits your desires, you can reach out to your college's career center to see if any connections they have formed through the years can help you land a job that you want.

Only a few people stay at their first job for their entire working life. For everyone else, the ideal career is achieved through persistence, patience, and a determination to succeed. If you stick with it and remain focused on the goal, you will be able to realize your dream of becoming a medical assistant.
