Alcorn State University's Theresa Cole Named Educator of the Year
Posted By: Reggie Culpepper on June 23, 2020

A professor at Alcorn State University’s School of Nursing is being recognized for her dedication to teaching.

Theresa Cole, an assistant professor at the School, was named the 2020 Nurse Educator of the Year Award by the Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nursing (MOADN).

The Nurse Educator of the Year Award was established by the MOADN Board of Directors to recognize a deserving nursing professor that influences nursing practice through professionalism and excellence in clinical practice.

Cole credits her peers and students for enabling her to win the award. She feels the accolade is an excellent representation of what the School has to offer.

“Winning this award is a tremendous honor,” said Cole. “This award is not just for me; it also represents Alcorn and the School of Nursing. I am surrounded by such great faculty and staff, all of who play an important role in my work as an educator and the success of the students. The feeling is great.”

Nursing students play a significant role in Cole’s success not only as a teacher but also as a learner. She appreciates the opportunity to experience a mutually impactful relationship with her students.

“The students are why I am here, and I pray that I have a positive impact and enhance their learning. I learn from them as much as they learn from me. It is gratifying to know that I have played a small part in their journey to become nurses.”

Watching her students overcome the challenges of nursing school to achieve success is one of Cole’s teaching career highlights.

“I love getting that call or text from students saying that they have passed their state board of nursing exam, which is the final exam that makes them a nurse. There is no better feeling. Their success is my success.”

The award sets a precedent for Cole and her co-workers to uphold going forward. Cole looks forward to using the newfound motivation to reach elevated heights in her field.

“There is a standard that has to be upheld. This award motivates me to do more for my students and the School of Nursing. I want our department to be recognized for all of its great work and the great team of faculty members.”
